* Pratibha Patil gives go ahead to increase vice-president’s salary from Rs 40,000 to Rs 125,000 a month

NEW DELHI: Indian President Pratibha Patil has approved the law giving her a 300 percent hike in salary taking her monthly pay cheque to Rs 150,000 from Rs 50,000 per month in the New Year.

She also gave her assent to another law that will hike the monthly salary of vice-president MH Ansari’s salary from Rs 40,000 to Rs 125,000 per month.

The hike comes a year after the cabinet considered a proposal seeking an increment to the salary of India’s first citizen and enhancing post-retirement benefits for former presidents and vice presidents. Earlier, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had taken a decision to rationalise the salaries.

The hike comes close on the heels of government announcing a bonanza for its employees by implementing the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission report under which a secretary at the centre will draw Rs 80,000 a month. Immediately after the hike was announced, President Pratibha Patil contributed a month’s salary to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund towards the relief and rehabilitation of those affected by Bihar floods. The salary of president, which was fixed at Rs 10,000 in the constitution, was gradually raised to Rs 50,000 a month in 1998 with effect from January 1, 1996. Almost everything that the president does or wants to do is taken care of by the annual Rs 22.5-crore budget that the government allots for his upkeep. courtesy indian express

LoL!!!

All I can say is that the top leadership both India & Pakistan are just the same!

Only second time since independence.
Anyhow this only gives me one more reason to like Abdul Kalam better.
Atleast here they are showing the hike on books.
She had corruption charges on her before coming to office.

Neo,Salaries of all central govt employee of GOI were hiked with implementation of salary commision named Sixth pay commsion since NOv 2008.And with that GOI has to raise salary of president of India too. Once approved by the Parliament, this pay commision recommendation can become law after its signed by president of india.

Thats why u see president Pratibha Patil approving her own salary hike...
As u see ,even in a democracy some ppl are more than equal.:)

Ha! Politicians are fatcats every damn place. Same thing here in the US...the Congress approved salary hikes for themselves and elite G-12 and up payscales but has done diddly squat about the Minimum Wage which was last adjusted in the frist Clinton Term.

The good thing though, is that at least this self-greasing is visible and public rage no matter how inconsequential it maybe, is at least allowed. Just imagine kickbacks, bribes and 'deferred compensation'(my all time fav) is dealt out.

All we can do is sit back, hope our bellies are full and drudge along.

IIRC, according to Indian rules no govt. employee is supposed to have salary higher than Indian President. Since, India needs to attract the Scientists and Researchers and the likes for its development and reverse the brain drain that has been happening, India has started to offer attractive salaries (almost 50% hike) to them and in order to do that it had to start with the President.

Yup, the sixth Pay commision is a treat. My uncle's salary has seen a 100% hike in the Pay commision.. so have the salaries of all central govt. officials.

The President of India is the supreme authority, she has to approve her own salary, but she cannot demand a salary. The monthly pay gets decided by the pay commision, and simply because there is no higher authority than the President Of India, she has to approve her own salary. Something even the Prime Minister Of India cannot do.!!!

Just 1.5 lakh rs:woot:....i know bank execs with better salaries!!
