I have not brought the above mentioned post in to the discussion.. Just answered to some thing posted by another..

On hindsight if it's necessary to bring in the subject of TN in the context of Indo/Lanka interests, We should be allowed to do so.. All those who cannot stomach factual posts can ignore them at will

Nov 26, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has started to provide onboard maritime security to vessels in the Indian Ocean and training to Sea Marshals to prevent piracy.

The Government has created a Maritime Division in a fully state-owned security company to provide weapons and ammunition to private maritime security companies engaged in on board security duties, Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said.

Delivering the Keynote address at the fourth annual maritime security conference "Galle Dialogue 2013" in Galle Monday, the Defense Secretary enlightened the participants at the two-day conference on the security services Sri Lanka provides to combat the piracy in the region.

One of the key considerations is maintaining the Indian Ocean as a secure highway for international commerce, the Defense Secretary noted. Ensuring freedom of navigation, securing its choke points, and reducing piracy are important drivers behind the presence of extra-regional fleets in the Indian Ocean, he emphasized.

He said Sri Lanka, through a Public Private Partnership with a local private security company, has started to provide vessels with on board teams composed of former Navy personnel with considerable experience in combating attacks on sea.

Sri Lanka is also a major disembarkation point for security teams from other countries.

The Sri Lankan government provides logistical support for the movement of weapons and ammunition, including the provision of bonded warehouses for their storage.

More recently, Sri Lanka has begun operating strictly regulated and secure floating armories to fulfill this requirement, according to the Defense Secretary. Utmost precautions are taken to ensure complete accountability for the weapons and equipment provided, he assured.

In addition, Sri Lanka has recently begun providing training facilities for Sea Marshals.

Rajapaksa said this is especially important because the International Maritime Organization requires all Sea Marshals to be properly trained and certified.

He highlighted that with the provision of all these services, Sri Lanka is increasingly gaining recognition as an important contributor to the security of the Sea Lanes of Communication in the Indian Ocean.

The Sri Lankan government expects the demand for the maritime security services to continue until such time the counter-piracy action by international fleets and continued use of on-board private security combine deter piracy in this region.

I think it's more of a case that India, particularly certain self professed defense analysts there getting caught in the fear mongering by the west lead by the US.. Whatever the overly jingoistic posters here may suggest the fact remains neither India as the regional power nor any of it's neighbors want a antagonistic relationship.. All stakeholders know that a friendly India is needed for their own stability and economic development and India knows a peaceful neighborhood is paramount to their ambitions.. No state will upset that apple cart willingly..
I have to agree with this as well. I think its a case of the politicos and some defence analysts buying US led Western press fear mongering of China.

To think that Myanmar went so far as to hold a joint Naval exercise right beside Coco just to assure India, tells about how much they also want good relations with India and also about how paranoid the Indian politicos were.

India absolutely cannot grow unless its neighbours are at peace. There are only two neighbours who dont impact Indian growth as such - Pakistan and Myanmar - that is because the borders with these are not easy and open to cross as it is with the others.

We need Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan to prosper else our growth will be severely limited.

The region has come a long way since the cold war days and Indira Gandhi(imo was a c@nt of misery), Now trade and economic's have presided over politics
I disagree here.
Indira Gandhi did a great service to South Asia simply by dividing Pakistan into two.
Pakistan right now is in a full home grown jihadi mess and unstable nation with nuclear weapons with bare minimum economic growth keeping pace with their high population growth.

Now on the other hand, BD is a relatively far more stable and free society which is progressing economically and is already more developed than India in social indicators. That is worth applauding. They are focussed on economy and raising the standard of living of their people.
And to think under Pakistan, BD would have been cesspool of nukes and jihad that Pakistan is.

I don't think @Gibbs 's views of Indira Gandhi are based upon her treatment to BD, but rather upon her treatment to Sri lanka.

Wasn't it under Indira Gandhi's watch that Tamil extremists(or freedom fighters as our Tamil friends believe) were trained and armed by India? What started as a bargaining chip to ensure Sri lanka's fair treatment of it's Tamil populace spiraled so quickly out of Indian control that by 1987, our Army had to fight them and our army had to prevent a coup in maldives by PLOTE. The Tamil insurrection has exacted a terrible toll on all Sri lankans. For being it's actual architect, IG deserves all the chiding that she gets.
