What's new

Indian medicines have become the latest among pakistan import

Makes sense. It's not just the MNC's. There are a lot of Contract Manufacturers for MNC's who also launch their own brand of generic/fake drugs. End result is that the drugs are cheaper.

To Below Freezing's point: True there is a big spurious drug trade in India, but right below India is China. In your own link OECD says 75% but WHO says 35% is from India. Really inconsistent data. Only reason it is so is because local Chinese rely a lot on traditional Chinese medicine rather than drugs.
BTW could some one please enlighten me on how it is possible to legally export spurious/fake drugs? Unless the African's or Pakistani's have acquired the drugs through illegal means, there are numerous checkpoints it has to pass and trade in fake drugs is next to impossible.

Sorry I don't believe blogs over OECD statistics.

You don't seem very knowledgable about India's place in the pharmaceutical industry. India contributes at most, raw materials and low level precursors, less often advanced precursors, and much less frequently the active ingredient or formulated product and almost never a new chemical entity. India's ability to carry out drug discovery and research is extremely low. Developed countries do not even dare source their APIs from India very often due to purity issues. In pharmaceuticals as in everything else, India is an exporter of raw materials and importer of finished goods.

Where do western countries as a medical tourism??India or china heck the world doesnot even recognise a chinese MBBS degree, u think consuming tiger/dog/pig bones will cure diseases ??well then u guys have unique and gr8 patients ..congrats on that we r not interested to compete u on that..

You need to do a lot more research on this subject. India and China have actually allied on this particular issue about generics vs branded ingredients at the WTO against the developed nations. Indian and Chinese generics, while scoffed at by western nations and agencies and called fakes actually work. Indian pharma companies make more generics than anyone else in the world and these drugs are the ones that are called spurious because there cannot be a published article on clinical studies of these drugs in European/US journals.

indeed almost all of the medicines have been patented in the west.
But the medicine works(true for both india and china)

Not all counterfeit drugs are dangerous. As long as its works I am ok with the 75% figure. We are just providing cheap medicines to poor people. Patenting life saving drugs is just sad.

And apparently the highest percentage of fake drugs in circulation is in China.

I beg to differ, please don't glorify "Fake drugs" just because India happened to be the biggest source, "fake drugs" are responsible for killing thousands of human being on a yearly basis, perhaps that sounds OK to you? However no sane people will ever agreed with you though.

WHO launches taskforce to fight counterfeit drugs

WHO will launch a taskforce in late 2006 to fight a thriving multimillion-dollar illegal trade in counterfeit drugs, vaccines and other medical products.

The International Medical Products Anti-Counterfeiting Taskforce (IMPACT) aims to put a stop to the deadly trade in fake drugs, which studies suggest kill thousands of people every year.

Yeah, No 2 "FAKE DRUGS" Circulation also meant the second "Biggest victim", thanks to the "Fake drugs Lord" India once again.

Are you saying that the fake drugs being circulated in China is being exported from India?

And no am not glorifying spurious drugs, but if the drugs don't have any harmful ingredients and have all the active ingredients needed to fix the illness then I have no issues with it.

there are some very good indian drugs manufactured which are sometimes better and cheaper than their western types. no harm in importing these medicines.

Hopefully a lot more people will see this logic.

Indian pharmaceuticals are cheaper because they use inferior formulations, have lower purities or may even be counterfeit. I suggest no one that values their life to buy Indian medication.

for your information,
we have a really advanced pharmaceutical industry.

All this talk about fake drugs, and no one read this? Of course they did, but people want to troll anyways.

Meanwhile, some quarters have raised concerns regarding the safety of medicines from India. But one official of the Federal Drug Quality Control Board in Islamabad has said that laboratory tests conducted on samples of the smuggled drugs revealed most of them as safe.

Pharmacist Malik Akhtar Khan says one way of easing such worries is to simply register the Indian medicines, since this would mean these would have to pass through the regular government controls.

Why do you guys engage people like below? Indians have way too much time and no job it seems. The same article (from 2008) mentions WHO saying that number are like 38%..Aren't you feeling glad now!

India has separate units to produce fake drugs, all the output is exported to China. They cause verbal diarrhea and mental retardation. :)

Seems you may taken some of that medication yourself
