Doctors save speared Indian boy

A six-year-old Indian boy is recovering after doctors removed a two metre (6ft) iron rod that speared his body when he fell from a terrace.

Mehul Kumar was rushed to hospital in the city of Ranchi in Jharkhand after the incident on Wednesday.

Doctors at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences removed the rod in a four-hour operation.

The doctors said he had lost a lot of blood and suffered liver and stomach injuries but "nothing major".

Mehul was playing on the Indian festival of Holi when he fell on the rod in a terrace under construction at his grandparents' home

He was given first aid at a local hospital than transferred to the Rajendra.

A surgeon there, Sandeep Aggarwal, said: "Opening the abdomen, we discovered his liver was injured, the stomach was injured, but thankfully, the spleen and pancreas were safe.

"The child was lucky that he did not suffer any major injury but yes he had substantial injuries."

Dr Aggarwal praised Mehul for his strong willpower.

RIMS director NN Agarwal said: "Mehul will recover fast and properly because he is a child and most of his vital organs are in the process of development.''

Amazingly this is not an isolated incident in India.

Last year, doctors in Delhi removed a 5ft iron rod from the chest of a 22-year-old man after a road accident.

And a 21-year-old construction worker in the western city of Pune had a 6ft rod removed that pierced him from shoulder to thigh via his abdomen.

NEW DELHI: It's almost as if 23-year-old Supratim Dutta was born to live twice. A five-feet-long and 2 inches wide iron angle pierced through the HE LIVED TO TELL: A 5-ft-long iron angle pierced Supratim Dutta's body. Miraculously, he survived. (TOI)
upper half of Dutta's body when he was involved in a road accident on July 12. A six-hour-long surgery at the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre (AIIMS) later, Dutta survived to tell the tale.

HCL executive Dutta was on his way to his work in Gurgaon in an office car when the driver lost control and hit the Metro barricades on MG Road. "The impact was such that an iron angle pierced through the bonnet, then the dashboard and impaled Dutta," said colleague Saurabh Aggarwal, who was the first to reach the spot.

Interestingly, it was Dutta's last day at work. "He was supposed to join a new company next month. He was going to office just to bid his colleagues adieu. He is not able to talk much but he told me that the driver was sleepy," said Sukumar Dutta, the victim's father, adding, "HCL has extended all help to us." For nearly one-and-half hours after the accident, Dutta remained immobile in the car. He then called his cousin, his friends in HCL and his parents.

Dutta's mother Rubeena received his call at 6.30 am. As Sukumar was not at home, she rushed to the spot with her neighbour. "He told me 'ma help me. I have met with an accident and have a rod passing through my chest.' I couldn't believe what I was hearing," said Rubeena.

Saurabh had reached the spot in the meantime. With the help of locals, he managed to cut the angle and rushed his friend to the trauma centre. "It took nearly half-an-hour to cut the angle," said Saurabh.

Dutta's condition shocked even the most hardened doctors at the hospital.

"The doctors had to assess his condition before planning how to go about the surgery," said Dr MC Misra, chief, AIIMS Trauma Centre. The surgery lasted for nearly six hours during which the iron angle was carefully removed.

The iron angle had impaled Dutta right through the centre of his upper body, just below the chest. "The angle had caused a lot of damage. Most of his organs had been affected. We had to operate on him for that also and carefully assess the damage. It was one of the rare medical emergencies where doctors had to be very careful as one wrong move would have meant that we would have lost the patient," said a senior doctor.

Recuperating at the trauma centre, Dutta is being kept under constant observation as doctors fear the possibility of infection. "Though his condition is stable, he is still under observation," said Dr Misra. Doctors added that the case was rare because the object involved was not sharp. Thankfully, Dutta's spine was not damaged and his body movements remain intact.

Meanwhile, his parents can't stop thanking the doctors and God for giving their son a new lease of life. "He is alive and that's more than enough for us. The doctors are saying that he is recovering and we hope to take him home soon," said Sukumar.

Keeper of Mecca's Holy Ka'aba Mosque in Mumbai hospital

Mumbai (PTI): The keeper of the Holy Ka'aba in Mecca, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheibi, and his wife have undergone a health check-up at the prestigious Asian Heart institute here, a doctor of the hospital said on Friday.

"The keeper of the Holy Ka'aba, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al- Sheibi, his wife M Shahidi are here for health check-up. They are admitted with our hospital since the past two days," Vijay D' Silva, an ICU specialist at Asian Heart Institute said.

As per Islamic beliefs, Ka'aba is the holiest place where millions of Muslims from across the world come to perform Haj every year.

"They are an elderly couple. Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheibi is already 81 years of age. As one starts ageing, one should undergo a regular health check-up and so he is here," Dr. D'Silva said.

Al-Sheibi's eldest son Tallal Aziz Shahidi, who is accompanying his parents, said, "Dr D'silva and his team have performed the health check-up. Everything is fine."

"We are happy with the treatment meted out to us here. My parents are expected to be discharged today," he added.

Doctors at the Asian heart institute had performed a successful bypass heart surgery on the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the AIIMS in February and recently introduced Akshay Kumar as its brand ambassador for the 24×7 heart helpline centre.
