Indian army destroyed its own bunkers and played dead enemy combatants for medals

Army officers faked kills for glory

The Indian Army could be killing far less enemies in Siachen than it claims. It could also be claiming awards and citations for imagined gallantry. The Leh-based 14 Corps HQ is investigating a massive fraud in which at least a third of 50 claimed “kills” on the glacier last year could be fakes.

In the eye of the storm are the 5/5 Gorkha Rifles and the battalion’s commanding officer (CO), Colonel KD Singh. A young Major of the unit, Surinder Singh, has given an Army court of inquiry (COI) headed by Brig HS Nagra, Deputy GOC, 3 Infantry Division, specific details of fake “kills” made by the company of which he was commander.

The alleged fraud was carried out between July and November 15, 2003. Maj. Singh has claimed that he — and several fellow officers — faked the killings under orders from Col Singh, who allegedly told him (the Major) that he should show “imagination and initiative” in carrying out the acts.

Excerpts from what Maj Singh told the COI:

• On July 29, a lieutenant of his company reported a “kill” in the Chandan complex. But there had been no enemy movement in the area between July 7 and 28.

• On August 8, the same officer shot a fake video of an enemy “kill”. Rifleman Shyam Lal Thapa of the unit posed as the “dead enemy”.

• On August 24, three enemy “kills” were captured on video. Col. Singh rang up to congratulate him the next day, and asked him to ensure a “hazy video”.

• In order to make “enemy activity” realistic, it was decided to first construct an “enemy air defence bunker”, and then destroy it. On September 21, the bunker — in India’s territory — was destroyed by Indian rockets and mortar. A splinter hit Maj. Singh, who was evacuated, and a case for Vir Chakra/Sena Medal for him was moved. The destruction of the “enemy bunker” was recorded on tape.

Maj Singh blew the whistle on the fake kills in December last year, after a disagreement with his CO. He described the fraud to several top commanders, including Army chief Gen NC Vij. Subsequently, Maj Gen RPS Ralhan, GOC, 3 Infantry Division, ordered the COI.

HT sent written queries to the PRO, HQ Northern Command and PRO, Army HQ, seeking comments on the scandal.

The Northern Command PRO did not reply, but a spokesperson in Udhampur said the Army would not like to comment since the matter was “sub judice”. He did not say where the case was pending, and on what issues.

The Army PRO faxed a reply wanting to know specifics like unit names and dates so that he could verify the information.

The scandal is likely to have embarrassed the Army greatly. A few months ago, Corps Commander Lt-Gen Arvind Sharma had actually made a presentation on the Siachen ‘enemy kills’ at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington
whats the source for this?

NEW DELHI, India (Reuters) - Indian troops staged fake battles on the world's highest battleground and made false claims about killing Pakistani soldiers in a bid to win medals for gallantry, the Defense Ministry said Friday.

The admission came after the Hindustan Times reported that Indian soldiers had shot "hazy videos" of faked battles on the Siachen glacier last year, posing as dead enemy troops and even destroying one of their own bunkers.

Indian and Pakistani troops have been deployed since 1984 on the snowy wastes of the Siachen glacier, north of the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir. It is one of the world's most inhospitable places, where more soldiers die of cold and altitude sickness than through enemy action.

"Based on certain complaints that enemy killings have been fabricated by one unit in central glacier, a court of inquiry was ordered," the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

It said a major had been found guilty of "having faked killings of some enemy personnel and destruction of enemy bunkers." The officer faces disciplinary action.

The Hindustan Times said that a third of the 50 killings of Pakistan soldiers attributed to Indian troops on the Siachen glacier last year may turn out to be false.

To make their claim realistic, Indian troops built an air defense bunker on their side of the glacier and destroyed it with rockets and mortars, claiming it was a Pakistani bunker, the newspaper said.

But the ministry said nobody had been given any awards for the faked battles.

"The system of awards and citations is absolutely foolproof and above board. There is no question of anyone receiving awards and citations for false claims," the statement said.

India and Pakistan have observed a cease-fire on Siachen since November.

Anyone else noticed the absence of return firing?
Strange for an occupied outpost, huh?

So two mortar teams almost razed an old house?
Impressive!

Oh well, Tay.

 propaganda video fail asusual...

Here is a real LOC cross firing video.... Wasn't released by Pak army rather by some soldier from the post...

You can hear indians firing back... unlike this fake video... which has been exposed.... pics of civilians also taken by them... ironic how they are claiming them to be soldiers...

They targetted civilians asusual...

PA helping the civilians from the same house after the ceasefire;

So Bhartis are going Ape sh** about hitting a structure with a Pakistani flag on it.
Or may be the big telecommunication antenna through which the Pakistani soldiers communicated with the HQ was a big give away.....oh wait, that's just a basic TV aerial , a common sight above any house.
This is what the Indians achieved, destroying some locals house. The poor family later asked PA soldiers for assistance in digging out their dead and wounded.

Then when we retaliate we are aggressors.

Why, yes bro, of course even : it makes sense.

Start with Windjammer's idea from two posts above yours.

As per OP :
Indian Army zealously strikes a PAK Army F.O.B. ...
...

actually a house whose owner is a proud patriot ...
which is clearly an accident, a mistake, involuntary!!!

If Pakistan then attacks a real IA outpost, it will be faulty of aggression.
India didn't mean to attack Pakistan, it was a sincere mistake :dirol:

Maybe the attackers were not even soldiers, could be a neighbours' feud?
Man, must that flag waver on tha hill hav' played his stereo real loud, huh?

 Tay.
