India army boost of 264 artillery regiments. but most of them are equipped with 70’s era 105mm Indian field Gun which are complemented by 130mm M-46 howitzer guns Supplied by the Soviet union in 60’s while these howitzer guns have been upgraded to 155 mm standard now. but this upgraded equipment simply cannot compete with modern Computer aided artillery howitzer guns in today’s modern warfare.

Indian Army’s long-term plan to replace these with 155 mm howitzers recently got a major boost after OFB developed 155mm Howitzers based on specification and manufacturing know how received under Transfer of Technology (TOT) decades ago from Bofors of Sweden, were cleared for production after extended field trials in Sikkim and Rajasthan .

Army will order 114 155mm,45-Calibre Howitzer ” Dhanush ” which will equip a number of medium artillery regiments, the Initial order will be later followed up with 300 Plus more Dhanush guns. idrw.org already has confirmed that later batches of OFB manufactured Dhanush Howitzer will get upgraded 52 caliber barrels from DRDO’s ATAG Program, which will provide better range over existing 45-Calibre barrel.

Advance Towed Artillery Guns System (ATAGS) program

DRDO is also developing a new lightweight 155mm,52 Calibre Howitzers under Advance Towed Artillery Guns System (ATAGS) program which will have an effective shooting range of 60 kilometers while weighing only 12 tonnes. DRDO currently invited Private players like Bharat-forge, L&T, Tata Power SED and Punj-Lloyd to participate in the ATAGS program.

DRDO plans to start working on the first prototype of New Gun from Next year on-wards once sourcing of components is done. DRDO already has frozen design aspect of the gun and plans to offer it for trails by 2018-19 .

M777 155mm/39 towed guns

Defence Acquisition council also recently cleared long delayed ultra light howitzer requirements of Indian Army, when BAE agreed to Produce their M777 155mm/39 towed guns in India after entering into a partnership with an Indian firm. India initially will place orders for 145 guns which later expanded with follow-up repeat orders over a period of time. BAE systems also offered to make India Global center for assembly, integration and testing (AIT) and Sources of Spares for current operators of the gun.

M777 155mm/39 towed guns weighing only 4.2 tonnes compared to conventional 14-16 tonnes of 155mm howitzers are essentially for Mountain warfare and can be ferried under-slung by (Chinook) heavy lift helicopters that the Indian Air Force (IAF) is buying. it will be equipped with proposed XVII Mountain strike Corps especially to be raised for China front for deployment in Mountain terrain.

This bloody 60 K M Range gun weighing just 12 ton is awesome. This shall give us a A** kicking fire power. We we can make it accurate (Which I am sure would be), then we shall be able to bomb our enemy at a very low cost and shall be able to inflict the damage at a very low cost.

Priority should be gibe do develop this ASAP &anufactring should be given to pvt players

Big mouth army generals along with antony!!! What they were doing for last ten years???? For the first artillery IA have to wait for another 3/4 years.

Now they should stop boasting and induct the first artillery. Where is that antony guy? Isn't he ashamed?

Credit of new artillery goes to general V K Sing. He asked the DODO to initiate the project as technology transfer was already done by Bofors along with the guns.

Now we'll be able to take out the Terrorist training camps from 50-60 kms away!! We wouldn't need covert action on ground to do so! A terror attack in Kashmir will be met by an artillery barrage/fire assault of horrendous proportions on the terror training camps across the LoC/IB to obliterate them and their occupants!

That's an option and the most likely one! :-)

Why not scrap out DODO and directly ask the private companies to compete for the tender. TATA and Bharat Forge have already developed prototypes.

Involvement of private companies will hopefully yield results where sarkari offices have failed for decades.

Terrorist camps are not located 50-60 km from the border but deep inside Azad Kashmir. The terrorists march for days and weeks before crossing the border. If artillery barrage was the soltuion of everything then Indian army would have done it long back. The SMERCH has a range of 90 km. Other than igniting a local artillery duel an artillery barrage won't achieve much. If their camps are hreatened then the terrorists will simply shift camps - a simple and economic solution. Artillery on he other hand cannot be moved around like that.

It is surprising that a person like you who claim to have a military service background are being so naive here.

AFAIK 2003 Ceasefire Agreement prohibits the use of artillery.

Anything that is "light weight" is not possible by standards of DRDO

Jokes apart, but good move to invite private sector, that should add some traction.

And isn't infiltrating terrorists prohibited too? Let's not act like saints. It's now an eye for an eye. Enough of Gandhian principles of turning the other cheek. Times have changed!

We have the targets, which are terror training camps and launch pads across the LoC/IB. The other side has no targets except villages on the Indian side which they would be loathe to target as it can have international ramifications due to civilian casualties.

Look, we had daily exchanges of artillery fire for 14 years. Yet terrorists kept coming in droves. Increase in range by 20-30 km (that too with expensive rounds) will not change that.
60 km range?I highly doubt it.That can only be achieved with RAP rounds.

How many international communities or organisations have interfered in Kashmir issue? In one particular hread you and some others were cheering government policy not to help the father of a slain soldier to get justice because doing so might "internationalise" the issue. Now you saying international ramifications would be a deterrent?

NO international country is going to intervene. The world has already too many hot spots and wars going on for them to bother about some Kashmir conflict. South China sea, Korean Peninsula, Iraq, Middle East, TTP in Pakistan, Ukraine crisis, Russian aggression in eastern Europe. USA already has pressing concerns, they won't support any side on Kashmir.

How many countries have slapped sanctions against Pakistan for sponsoring violence in Kashmir? They started a war, they gave shelter to USA's most wanted man and USA is still giving them weapons and finance.

Politics is about interests not morality.
