OSLO: At the award ceremony for this year's Nobel Peace Prize on Monday, Al Gore put the onus on the US and China to take the lead against global warming. India's Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the United Nations' IPCC which shared the prize with Gore received the Nobel medal on behalf of the UN panel.

In his acceptance speech for the peace prize, Gore said, "While India is growing fast in importance, it should be absolutely clear that it is China and most of all my own country, the United States, the two largest carbon dioxide CO2 emitters that will need to make the boldest moves, or stand accountable before history for their failure to act." He added that both the US and China "should stop using each other's behaviour as an excuse for stalemate and instead develop an agenda for mutual survival in a shared global environment."

In his acceptance speech, Pachauri stressed the potential for cutting back on greenhouse gases without affecting economic growth.

Both Gore and Pachauri will now head to Bali where a UN convention of climate is currently on. Gore hoped that there would be a "bold mandate" in Bali for a "visionary treaty to be completed, ratified and brought into effect everywhere in the world by the beginning of 2010." Pachauri, too, expressed hope that the Bali meeting would provide "positive" results.

Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Ole Danbolt Mjos, said that though the number of entries for the peace prize has been steadily increasing, this year's decision was not very difficult. Referring to the importance of global warming, he said, "It is rare for the world to be so concerned with a particular phenomenon or for that phenomenon to have such a decisive impact on our existence on earth."

Pachauri was not the only South Asian presence on the stage at the glittering ceremony held at the Oslo City Hall. Among the performances during the award ceremony was a jugalbandi between Pakistani pop star Salman Ahmad and tabla player Samit Chatterjee.

Outside the venue, the weather had some resonance with global warming. Local residents said that it has been an unusually warm December so far with little snowfall to show for.
