Global arms and military services sales rose for the first time since 2010, with India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, China and Algeria emerging as the top importers during the five year period of 2012-2016, a Firstpost analysis of the latest Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) report on global arms sales showed.

Together, these countries accounted for 34 percent of all global imports with India leading the table accounting for 13 percent for all arms imports. Vietnam was a new entry in the top-10 arms importers accounting for 3 percent of all global sales.

Based on sales by the world's 100 biggest arms producers, the report pointed at an increase of 1.9 percent (based on 2015 US dollar values) from 2015 with $374.8 billion spent on arms and military services. Based on current US dollar values, the arms sales rose by 1.3 percent.

According to SIPRI's military expediture database, the volume of transfers of major weapons in 2012–16 was 8.4 percent higher than in 2007–11.

The United States managed its stand as the world's largest spender followed by China and Russia. The US also accounted for largest share of arms sales (33 percent) followed by Russia 23 percent. Interestingly, Saudi Arabia, the fourth largest spender, is the largest client of American arms, accounting for 13 percent of arms sales by US companies. The US also accounted for 14 percent of all Indian purchases, however, it was Russia which led the table accounting for 68 percent of India's arms imports during 2012-2016.

India was also among the top five spenders on arms and military services in 2016 spending $55,923 million in arms and military services. According to the report, geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea, West Asia, and the Indian sub-continent has fuelled a rise in arms imports in West Asia and the Asia-Oceania, with the two regions contributing to 72 percent of all arms imports during 2012-2016 as compared to 2007-2011.

Though USA, Russia, China, France, and Germany accounted for 74 percent of the total volume of arms exports, a change was witnessed in arms exporters with South Korea maintaining its stand as an emerging arms supplier, whereas Germany and France seeing a decrease in arms sales.

That means both are not capable of making weapons?

India = Owes half a trillion USD to IMF/WB with a share of debt to GDP ratio of 69 percent.
VS
Saudi = Has sovereign fund SAMA worth half a trillion plus with a share of debt to GDP ratio of 13%
India's nominal GDP is also 3x larger than KSA's, so it doesn't need to rely on savings to fund its purchases.

Also, such sovereign wealth funds aren't meant for military purchases, they're meant to help a nation's economic situation, during times of hardship, or to help fund economic reforms.

It's unlikely that KSA is using its savings to fund its military, so bringing it up is pointless.

I was highlighting the solvency strength of both countries.

No country uses its sovereign funds for defense purchases, they are meant only for investment purposes and ultimately for the benefit of its economy and people.

BTW, If India's GDP is 3 times greater than the Saudis, look at the 1.3 billion low income people of India too vs few millions of Saudis. Of the two, who has the better purchasing power?

Look at the minimum wages of both the countries:

Saudi: $3.8
India: $0.3

India has no class.

Except you just said it yourself, 1.3 billion, which is becoming richer and richer, while KSA's economy remains stagnant, and is likely going to remain so until reforms are fully implemented, which will take a better part of a decade or two.

Even than, India's reliance of foreign purchasing is likely going to decline, due to increasing self-reliance, and its coffers are going to increase. Meanwhile KSA's coffers are decreasing, due to an increasing budget gap, and its attempts to industrialize and bring in a domestic defense industry is slowing down, even if KSA does have a number of big ticket items that it has deals to assemble/manufacture in KSA, such as the F-18SA.

Comparing the two in most ways is unfair for both sides, as both their armed forces have different roles, different needs, and most of all, different experiences.

Pakistan has a Division Stationed in Riyad for atleast 30 yrs--- To protect Faisal Clan
No Nation will do a favour like this to any other Nation for extended Durations

What stops Pakistan to Hold Balls of Saudis and negotiate for 2 SQns of Typoon(s) as Colateral
Remember SAUDIs are hyper sensitive about safety of Royal Family Only

both are wanna be shupa powa of South Asia and Middle east :lol:

Can you please explain again what is the purpose of the "Make-in-India" project? If Indians define it as the import of weapons, then Modi seems to have achieved a resounding success in his tenure.

Modi = Hawabazi & Natakbazi

Modi = Hawabazi & Natakbazi

Lol.. Just like how he took credit for INS Kalwari as a shining example of his "Make-in-India" project, it is possible that he might twist this tag of "largest importer of weapons" as a great success!

KSA has a very big defence budget and a very developed economy and are investing a lot to make their indigenous defence industry but what prevents supa powa India to produce defence equipment indigenously like their tejas and arjun tanks :D

What is the definition of a rich country?
A nation with a population that has a large disposable income, and relatively small debt; India is becoming a rich nation, it isn't a rich nation just yet.
