India, Russia ink pacts that will lead to defence deals worth Rs 72,000 crore

5 regiments and 12 battalions - 3 regiments with 2 battalions and 2 regiments with 3 battalions.

If what you claim is true, How many regiments and battalion did the Chinese buy for 3 billion $ ?

After losing some share of India’s defence space to the U.S. and other countries in recent years, Russia regained its footing with the agreements signed on Saturday.

Three agreements, worth $10 billion, were announced after the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin. They are inter-governmental agreements (IGAs) for five S-400 Triumf air defence systems and four stealth frigates and a stakeholder agreement for a joint venture to make Kamov-226T helicopters in India.

Designed by the Almaz-Antey Central Design Bureau, the S-400 Triumf, referred to as SA-21 Growler by NATO, is considered one of the most advanced long-range defence systems in the world. It can tackle all airborne targets at a range of up to 400 km.

For India, this means Pakistani aircraft can be tracked even when they are in their airspace. The five systems, to be operated by the Indian Air Force, will cost over Rs.39,000 crore. India is the second export customer, after China which last year signed a $3-billion agreement for six systems that are expected to be delivered in 2017.

India and Russia also signed an inter-governmental agreement for four additional Krivak or Talwar class stealth frigates, which are expected to cost upwards of $3 billion. Two ships will be built in Russia and the other two in India with Russian assistance. India had earlier procured six frigates of the same class in two different batches. It has been very pleased with the performance of the 4,000-tonne frigates which packed a lot of fire-power given their size. The ships are armed with the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. But it is surprising why India is going for additional frigates from Russia, when it is designing and building much bigger stealth ships.

Both sides have been discussing the agreement for some time, but it was delayed as India insisted on building the ships through the ‘Make in India’ route. The other reason for delay was Ukraine’s refusal to supply Russia with engines which are built by Zorya Nashproekt after the crisis in Crimea. However, the issue was sorted out, and Ukraine has no reservations about supplying engines to India.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Rostec State Corporation of Russia signed an agreement to set up a joint venture that will make Kamov-226T utility helicopters in India. Under the agreement, which is worth over $1 billion, at least 200 helicopters will be produced. They will replace the obsolete Cheetah and Chetak fleets of the armed forces. After induction, the Kamov helicopters, capable of operating at 20,000 feet, will help to maintain the forward posts on the Siachen glacier.

Effectively, the option to create a no-fly zone above the entire territory of Pakistan.

Building capacity. We simply can't build any more ourselves. We are not the Chinese, who would have produced these in a jiffy.

There goes the Kamov. Poor things, if only they knew what they were getting into.

Effectively, the option to create a no-fly zone above the entire territory of Pakistan.
But we are not purchasing them, you can have them and use them to create a no fly-zone over India.
We will buy a Chinese version when they will make it.

With the range they have, it will be difficult for aircraft to move about within Pakistani air space.

The Chinese version is of course an option. Depends on the speed and capacity of their copying machines.

Well they are not made for such purpose, nor it's useful there main Purpose is defense of areas.
From Pakistani prospective we will have many options to deal them as India would adopt if we deploy a system of same capacity.
The Chinese version is of course an option. Depends on the speed and capacity of their copying machines.
Probably much faster then we think, largely due to there past access to S-300 system and above all there copying is on Industrial scale,Russia may be end up allowing them to do for few more billions.

it is not the greatest fighter aircraft. it is reliable. if you can upgrade/customize avionics and get it at a discounted price it is worth.

The MiG company is dying slowly. they made iconic jets in the past.

Do you know what they call the F 16s in the USAF? 'Lawn Dart'. Seriously. You can ask any American pilot here and they will go Gung ho about the F 15 rather than the F 16 because of the survivability rates.

If the F 16 is not offered with the SABR radar and complete TOT (meaning the metal composition, manufacturing and SC cutting of blade) of the P&W F 100 engines and it's lines shifted to India there is no need to go for F 16.

common man if we have to deal with compined forces of PAF & PLAAF then we have to have both rafale and F16Blk70/72 in eaual numers and cost of APG series missiles is not as high as those from MBDA and you sir know it

anyway if we can afford 100 million worth F16 then we can also afford 20millon worth weapons package for it too and dont forget we have Griffin , Spike and Paveway2 family of air to ground munations and some other isreali air to ground munation of france and britain which too can be used on F16s or are compatiable with so all we need to buy are AIM9X and AIM120D/E and latest version of ARM from USA :coffee:

well F16 might be a 40 year old design even rafale was desigened 20 years back but here F16 is stillvery very potent and will remain cutting edge for at least two decades at least so nothing wrong in getting it if it gives a very leathal punch and is also helping us play with PAF war doctroine sicologically ;)

F16 brings the latest manufactring techs that frenchies will never give

F16 brings the most leathel weapons package and that too at reasonable rates which frenchies will never give

F16 brings LMs tech support and weapons mass manufacturing related managemnt skills which frenchies will never give or share with us

land last but not the least F16 brings political milage from USA and its allies

F16 brings latest training manuals and expert advice from many past and present users of F16sand diffrent war doctroines as we share some common enemies (S.Koreans , Taiwanese , singaporeans , israelies , yamricans ect ect)
Its not economics to operate f16 and its own weapons, which aren't compatible with any of the existing iaf birds.

Its joke if sombody says French can't match Americans in tot aka manufacturing tech,u are expecting a country even reluctant to share bottom level tech like javelin missile,a country block a second country selling theirs missile defence system like arrows to give us an useful techs?
Now let's come to paf scenario, the psychological advantage is always with paf if we choose 16,no matter how advanced it is. PAF pilots are professionals which having hands on experiences with 16 for the past 30 year so.

The only lethel weapon is 16 having is aim9x,restvall are having better alternatives in international market.

Regarding political milage,u don't need to buy 16 for that.. That part will be taken care by our neighboring country China. The day US feels China is no more threat to them, the next instant they will ditch us for some other else.egs Pakistan over India.

And lastly u don't worry, this vintage platform will see the light in tricolour, thanks to US boot licking bjp govt.

Yes, F-16 is a mediocre fighter in today's standard. It will be an utter shame if we go for them now, when all the other countries are either retiring them or going through a mid life upgrade. But, given that, if there is significant tech transfer which propels our aerospace industries 15 years into the future in terms of radar and engine technology, I believe we should go for them as an intermediate number booster.

My pennies will always be on Gripen though.
The only attractive thing 16 so far is engine and source code I repeat the entire source code note the manufacturing tech of the radar. We are not going to get that one from uncle Sam,mark my words.

and the best part is F16 is most used fighter which carries 8.5 tonnes(same as MKI ) of weapons load

How did you came to the conclusion that it can carry 8.5 tonnes of weapons load? :coffee:

I think Indian deal is for GE engines not P&W

MOSCOW: President Vladimir Putin has said Russia remains one of India's leading suppliers of advanced weapons and defence technology as "India is Russia's especially privileged strategic partner"
.

"Our countries actively collaborate in the military technical field. Russia remains in the lead in terms of both direct supplies of most advanced weapons and military equipment and conducting joint researches with India, as well as producing goods for military purposes," Putin told IANS/Sputnik in an exclusive interview ahead of his visit to India for the five-nations BRICS Summit in Goa+ this weekend.

"The construction of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the development of a new, fifth generation fighter aircraft are among the successful joint projects," Putin said.
He said many of the Russian projects in India+ not only have commercial importance but also play a significant social and economic role for the economies of the two countries.

Putin said such projects "harmoniously fit in the new Indian industrialisation programme", a reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" initiative.

"Russian companies see real prospects and high attractiveness of the Indian market," Putin said.
