India relies on China for 90 per cent of drug raw materials - The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: Imagine a situation where an Indian soldier's medical kit is running out of essential drugs on a battle front. This may sound like a figment of imagination, but given India's acute dependence on China for key ingredients (active pharma ingredients) for several essential drugs including several antibiotics, the prospect of such a scenario isn't all that remote. India depends heavily on imports — over 90% — from China for many key raw materials (mostly intermediates and some active p ..

We wil only continue to hurt our domestic players if we continue to look for the cheapest raw materials. Any new compnay cannto compete with Chinese co's which have state backing, they will drop the price just to kill the competition and then bring it back up afterwards. Long term support and planning is needed. UPA didn;t do shit for India.

I am completely floored with this info.

What was Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was doing for ten long years. Was he not watching India's interest. How come he allowed China to grab 90% of the critical drugs market.

Shame!!!

Dude it just tells me MMS was a puppet. He was a sheep surrounded by wolves. All he did was listen and act on a Maid's order. Now wonder if we have seen no progress.

does india have the raw materials to produce drugs?

Quote from the article:

"Any deterioration in relationship with China can potentially result in severe shortages in the supply of essential drugs to the country. Additionally, China could easily increase prices of some of these drugs where it enjoys virtual monopoly," said Bart Janssens, partner, BCG.

There are no domestic producers left for many of these such as Penicillin-G, and its derivative 6-Aminopenicillanic acid, or 6-APA, as it is commonly known, making the country entirely dependent on imports for key intermediates used in many essential antibiotics, including semi-synthetic penicillins and semi-synthetic cephalosporins.

"We had no alternative since China has a near monopoly in several APIs," said Ramesh Adige, a pharma expert who was formerly an executive director with Ranbaxy Labs.

Now if we were as daring and shameless as India when it comes to making generic drugs。。。。 :enjoy:

does india have the raw materials to produce drugs?

India imports raw ingredients to make generics, often illegally。

China is often accused of ”copying things“,but we never copy drugs since they are under the protection of patents。

It will be cakewalk for China to produce generics if the domestic laws so allow。:D

time to cut the suppy off, we have numerous ways to let modi's india suffer.

No problem we can always start....

Yes the fact is world's 97% minirals are in china. They have very rich soil.
And that is why they are growing.

We need to mine the sea for minerals but since China claimed a huge portion of the Indian Ocean, India needs to unite the IOR and pass rules that make it finacially and environmentally strict for China!

Why has India made their drugs industry entirely dependent on Chinese imports?

And as the article said, China has monopolies on many APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients).

You are putting the fate of your entire drugs industry into our hands.

You want the world to not like your country more and more, then go ahead and do your thing. It is like you saying to world why are you dependent on Chinese cheap stuff which you got monopoly on.

It doesn't matter whether you like us or not, it is never a good idea to put the fate of your economy in the hands of foreigners.

You didn't get the point. These are not colonial times. But for argument sake, it will be sourced from somewhere else or managed in the country itself if it comes to that. It is going to cost. Cost is the reason everything is getting sourced from China. We don't have oil so what do you want us to do. Ride bicycles all the time because oil is in foreign hands.

There is always a way out of every situation.

Blackmailing doesn't help. It will hurt you equally in monetary terms whatever it is.

is it me or others too saw this line?????

India depends heavily on imports — over 90% — from China for many key raw materials (mostly intermediates and some active pharma ingredients) that go into the making of at least 15-odd essential drugs
