As China inches ahead with the flight testing of its first fifth-generation J-20 stealth fighters, India is reportedly mulling over the option of making better of its rock-steady friendship with Russia by buying its off-the-shelf Sukhoi T-50 (also known as PAK FA) stealth fighter.

A recent report in the Economic Times quoted a top official of ministry of defence as saying that India has kept all the options on the table. That includes possibility of India buying about 60-65 jets off-the-shelf to joint production of the most advanced stealth fighter jet in Russian aircraft inventory.

The official also suggested the possibility of Indian Air Force pilots flight-testing the Russian stealth bomber as it hopes to break the logjam involved with the Indo-Russian collaboration on fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) project and to assess the capabilities of the new jet ahead of the state visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Moscow in December 2015.

With India foreseeing the induction of these advanced stealth jets by 2020, there has been no much movement on the FGFA programme since it was inked in 2007. Originally, India was expected to have about 200 jets, which later came down to 127. A recent report in The Tribune pointed towards India cutting it down to 65 jets or 3 squadrons strong.

Sukhoi PAK FA T-50 is comparable with American F-22 ‘Raptor’ in many parameters. Indian Air Force is in need of one such aircraft that combines stealth, ability to super-cruise, super-manoeuvrability, combat avionics and integration of multi-sensors.

Since the FGFA programme will take time to take off, buying T-50 stealth jets will be a stopgap arrangement, giving the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) time to test and manufacture the aircraft in India. India is seeking 43 improvements in T-50 suiting Indian conditions.

Additionally, with the US and Europe imposing sanctions on Russia over its alleged involvement in Ukraine crisis, Moscow is reportedly looking to “compress” the delivery time from the initial 94 months to 36 months.

This comes as India has scrapped its MMRCA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) project and opted for only 36 Rafale fighter jets from France through the government-to-government route. India is still struggling to get the indigenous fourth generation fighter aircraft, Tejas LCA fully operational.

Meanwhile, India is reportedly looking for collaborating with Russian companies in modernising its SU-30MKI aircraft (NATO reporting name, Flanker-H), the most advanced multirole air superiority fighters with the IAF.

This also follows recommendation by the Russian defence ministry to make upgrades to its fleet of SU-30SM aircraft. The upgraded aircraft will be featuring improved avionics, radar and engines.

Russia has shared a special place with India, apart from being its special strategic partner, though recent media reports suggested that Russia was endearing itself to the Pakistan Army and the civilian government.

Reports suggested the possibility of it exporting its latest Su-35 fighter jets after having agreed to sell multirole Mi-35M attack helicopters. But a recent statement from the Russian embassy has cleared doubts of the country taking decisions that are detrimental to the security and safety of India.

“Time and again, the Russian leaders have stated at the highest level that Russia will never take any steps detrimental to the security and safety of our special and privileged strategic partner? India, or the security structure in the South Asian region, or any other region for that matter,” the statement said, reported PTI

“This assurance is fully valid today as it was valid yesterday. This is the guideline of our President’s foreign policy concept,” it said.

“As regards the newspaper report from Nizhni Tagil, it is a sheer case of overstatement by the agency, on the one hand, and of overreaction by a section of the Indian media, – on the other,” it added.

According to estimates provided by the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, Russia delivered $4.7 billion worth of weapons and military hardware to India in 2014.

:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo::yahoo: this would be the best decision by modi govt. in defence till date. I hope it happens soon. This would strengthen our relation ship with Russia  since they are in dire need of money we must support them or we will loose our all time fav buddy. I would support Pak fa fgfa over rafale anyday

Time to go for the signing and also India should try and get some long term contract for Russian hydrocarbons.. Crude is expected to dip to $20 per barrel as per Goldman Sachs, so the severity of economic blockade and sanctions would have an impact. In another news, with the forecast of Putin that Syria crisis will lead to lots of migrants into heart of Europe coming true, there has been talks that France and Germany both will like to present a case in euro to stop the sanction regime against Russia. That decision may be the stepping stone of moving the Euro decision making away from US control and also acknowledging that Russia was correct in assessing the Syrian crisis and had warned them of the potential refugee disaster for South european nations facing the brunt to accommodate the refugees,
Thus fortunes of Russia will change in coming times. And India should make its way and take decisive actions by increasing the military cooperation as well as signing the economic deals too.

Sounds Good.

Rather than irritating Russia in and with the name of Collaboration , where there is nothing substantial to contribute, its better to let them build and buy from them...

What all add ons are needed can be recommended to them and the program assistance by standing at a distance and watching them build, with out uttering much would do a lot of good for this procurement program.

This would be an excellent decision if it happens. A big "IF" though.

Both at some 2 trillion USD, the Indian and Russian economies are of the same size.

Russia's population is 1/12 of India's。

Which country is in dire need of money?

You guys do have a sense of black humour. :enjoy:

So this is the reason for what Russian FM was open to sell Su 35S to our western neighbour....Btw this is not the first time that o Russian had played this trick on us...Last time in 1995 too Russians were open to sell Su 27 to Pak that was the major reason why we signed 1.3 Billion $ for 50 Su 30's in 1996....

And Growth ? And Sanctions ?

i like the rafale,

but what will be for medium role jets.(36 rafale is not enough).

If this happened we will make up for MMRCA time loss .

Lets get to the ground reality .
Firstly Chinese will get their J20 in no time . Which will be a huge blow for our BVR warfare thabks to RCS of MKI .

Secondly we have our own trouble of depleting squadrons after our old gloden birds mig21/27 put to rest

Thirdly Rafale deal is so fuked up . It will cost huge amount in our foreign reserves

Forthly very important point India has moved towards Make in India initiatives at the time when our fellow brothers in Russia are at sanctions from the west ...
We have to help them for sure there is no other way .

But time is in such a tangle India also in a situation where Fifth generation fighters are must not a luxury any more cant risk ourself with insecure china and vey fragile pakistan who are seeing uprising for their failure . So their option of last resort is to go for war with india and keep their people united in the name of national security .

So my friendd . Buying 60-80 Pakfa is a must considering my above points . We should go for it . As FGFA or AMCA or MK2 is too far away . If we ordered between 2015 first batch wil reach by 2018 or may be before that too .

Below are my wishes anf I belive we are going in thst direction . Our new set goal is 2022 . The year when MK2 AMCA FGFA will go online for mass production. So I presume any one with tiny urge to strengthen his country will go for

By 2022
60-80 Tejas MK1-P
60-80 Pak Fa
36 + 18 Rafale
And as planed another 60+ MKI .

These are our road map . And once again its all my calculations . I am a big fan of buying some some new stuff for our armed forces . I guess if we are dedicated to strengthen our Air force this will be the road map . For greater glory . We cant wauth till 2022 for FGFA . When china will get j20 by at least end of 2016 to 2017 .

I am waiting for HAL Tejas :P
Arey bhai dont worry your wish will come true . 40 already ordered so its conformed we will add 40 4th gen fighter into our force . With Air to air fueling which is so called JF17 MK2 for you . And in the mean time our baby is been taken into over drive with MK1-P .Stoo gab untill 2022 or for the beast MK2 fall in line . And any way 70 plus MKI are on the way . Which means not today even after 5 years we will rule your skies even withour rafale and pakfa yet to be signed . So thanks for yiur good wishes:cheers::enjoy:
