India, Malaysia Seek Closer Military Ties

NEW DELHI — India and Malaysia will explore ways to strengthen military ties between the two countries during the Jan. 30-Feb. 4 visit of the Indian Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne, to Kuala Lumpur.

As part of its “Look East” policy, India has been increasing strategic ties with countries such as Singapore, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia.

During his visit, Browne will meet Gen. Tan Sri Dato Sri Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin, the Malaysian chief of Defence Force, and Gen Tan Sri Dato Sri Rodzali bin Daud, chief of Malaysian Air Force, and discuss a wide range of bilateral issues on defense cooperation,
said an official of the Indian Defence Ministry.

A team of Indian Air Force pilots and technicians were in Malaysia in 2008 for two years to train the Malaysian pilots, weapon system operators and maintenance staff for the induction and operation of their newly acquired Su-30 MKM fighter aircraft from Russia.

India also helped Malaysia set up a Systems School for the Su-30 MKM at Gong Kedak Air Base.

“The Air Chief would be visiting Gong Kedak and Subang Airbases and hold talks on issues including professional exchanges, Su-30 Training, Courses, Maintenance and Logistic issues,” says the Indian Defence Ministry release.

Malaysia also seeks training in submarine operations from Indian personnel. Besides, Malaysia has also evinced interest in the procurement of the supersonic cruise missile Brah Mos,
said Defence Ministry sources.

India and Malaysia first signed a memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation in 1992.

So we secured a customer for Brahmos. :yahoo:

Malaysia have few other importance too, like:

a. A Muslim country.

b. A reply of string of pearls.

That is pretty serious defence cooperation. But Malaysia!!! Will Singapore take it easily?!!! Or Malaysia has a habit of talking about other's problems.

Chinese claim South China sea up to the coast of Borneo Island of Malaysia. Sound funny their seacoast is a Chinese claimed territory.

And anti-China alliance will go on. :yahoo:

Buddy, when we can buy Iranian oil in times when they are close to a war against Israel, US and the west, the issues of Malaysia and Singapore can be dealt with ease don't you think? I am still amazed about the oil deal in the current scenario and although our close relations to Israel. Says a lot about Indian foreign policy or how we balance such issues and still remain independent!

In times when Indians usually complain about our current government, this deal and the selection of Rafale in MMRCA, without bending to political pressure, shows that the government has some very good sides too!

P.S. Is it just me, or is it time that we invite several foreign air forces for a joint exercise like Red Flag too? Maybe it would even help to ease the tensions, when Su 30MKMs, F15SGs, Thailands Gripen C/D and Erieye AWACs, or Mig 29s from Bangladesh and Burma would join Indian forces.

You are rite bro. What i mean.... Actually India-Malaysia relation had many up and downs through out the history. Also there are some other issues.

That is an excellent idea.

I think we should focus on Naval engagements with Malaysians since a land-land war game has not much benefit apart from building goodwill. Malaysia has been a non-military strategic partner in the recent years and along with Vietnam and Thailand, we have already gained good success in ASEAN. The only challenges that remain to be realized are Burma, Cambodia and Laos. Once our Thorium reactors are on for sale, we will cover these countries for good partnership as well.

@Big Boss:

Malaysia has a significant non-Muslim population as well. I'd say this is more country to country than culture to culture (which is the case with Burma, Bhutan, Nepal and Thailand..and Indonesia as well to some extent).
