India as next manufacturing hub? Foxconn starts making Xiaomi phones in the country, to up capacity

By Gulveen Aulakh, ET Bureau | 14 Jul, 2015, 09.34PM IST

Foxconn Technology Group has started making and shipping its first smartphones for China's Xiaomi and American phone brand InFocus out of its new plant in Andhra Pradesh, as it takes a step forward towards making India its next manufacturing hub.

The world's largest contract manufacturer will ramp up production capacities of the plant, located in 7,000-acre Sri City special economic zone in the state, and will bring it at par with its manufacturing units in other countries, Vincent WH Tong, chairman of FIH Mobile, Foxconn's phone manufacturing unit, told ET.

"It (manufacturing) has just started and is moving as we speak. Actually, compared to our capacities elsewhere, it is not that bid a scale. In the long run we intend to grow the facility further," he said, but declined to comment on the quantities of mobile phones being made from the factory for Xiaomi and InFocus.

ET had reported in its June 24 edition that the Sri City unit - called Rising Star - will make about 10,000 phones a day, which is fairly small compared to Foxconn's much larger units in China. It has been set up at an investment of Rs 77 crore.

Tong added that the company was talking to multiple customers to make from the same facility, without sharing names of possible clients.

Chinese smartphone leader Xiaomi has publicly shared its plans to make phones from India but India head Manu Jain said that the company was still finalizing its manufacturing plans when asked whether it was getting smartphones made from Foxconn's new unit.

US based InFocus has started selling its M330 model priced at Rs 9,999 in India in March, through an exclusive partnership with Snapdeal. The company spokesperson wasn't immediately available for comments.

The maker of iPhones and iPads for Apple and Kindles for aiming to create at least a million jobs by setting up 10-12 manufacturing facilities in across the country by 2020, Foxconn chairman Terry Gou had said during his recent visit to India. The company plans to start from five states including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra and expand to other states through the decade.

"We're looking at investing into India in a significant way, but the policy to Make in Indianeeds to be quite aggressive in order for the true supply chain to come to India," he said. The top executive who was in India along with Foxconn chairman Terry Gou on a four day visit to multiple cities including Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, said that India figured in Foxconn's plans for the long run.

"Purely assembly does not have the element of scale, development and engineering, and it will have a limited impact for the economy. We're looking to Central and state governments alike, to put out some encouraging policies for people like us to Make in India," Tong added.

The Taiwan-based firm, also known as Hon Hai Group, that has a client list that includesCisco, Dell, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard, plans to make mobile handsets, tablets, TVs electronic products, batteries and key electronic components, routers, set-top boxes and printers among other products in India.

It also plans to set up including data centers and incubators in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The company is also looking to invest in Indian internet start-ups, small-medium enterprises and handset makers. Foxconn will also set up an India focused venture fund as a part of its plans to invest and partner with start-ups and e-commerce companies.

India has started to roll!

And the Congress must be getting pissed of at this!! What they couldn't do for the past 60 years is being done by the BJP led govt in quick time. Red in the face, they'll try and put a spanner in the works by raking up and preventing passing of the Land Acquisition and other bills in Parliament.

Embarrassing the BJP led govt at any cost is their priority and the only strategy they have. For them, the country be damned.

Airtel launches “Made in India” HD set-top-boxes

Airtel Digital TV, the DTH arm of Bharti Airtel, Thursday launched its first indigenously manufactured HD set-top-boxes in the country, as it seeks to reduce its imports.OUR BUREAU | 16 July 2015, 4:00 PM ISTNew Delhi: Airtel Digital TV launched its locally manufactured set-top boxes on Thursday as it aims to reduce imports and help create jobs, contributing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' Initiative.

The DTH arm of India's No. 1 telecom carrier is the first to offer set-top boxes manufactured locally. The high-definition devices are being made at a facility in Pune (Ranjangaon) by Airtel's partners MyBox Tech, a subsidiary of Hero Electronix, and ST Microelectronics.

The company hasn't shared the pricing of the India-made set-top boxes. Analysts said locally made set-top boxes would help companies offer them at competitive prices and reduce the need to buy them from vendors in China and Taiwan. Airtel's Digital TV services contributed Rs 24,759 million, or 4% of revenue in the year 2014-15.

The DTH arm of Airtel had over 10 million customers at the end of March. "With this, we aim to reduce our imports and thus help drive employment and growth within the country. In the long run, cost synergies will further help us extend more benefits to our customers," Shashi Arora, CEO, DTH/Media at Bharti Airtel, said in a statement.

The country has become an attractive alternative to China as a manufacturing base, with the government offering incentives such as capital subsidy and tax benefits. Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group, the contract manufacturer of products for Apple and Amazon, plans to make set-top boxes, TVs, tablets and batteries in India. Foxconn recently said it was in talks with Japan-based telecom and Internet major SoftBank Corp to form a joint venture for electronics manufacturing in India. It has started production of smartphones for China's Xiaomi and US-based InFocus.

"It is great that Airtel Digital TV is aligning itself with our Make in India vision as this will certainly pedal the fast gaining momentum of the initiative further," Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting, said in the statement. The indigenous HD+ set-top box will offer full HD 1080p support, MPEG-4 video with Dolby Digital Plus Surround Sound, 5X picture clarity, unlimited recording (via USB drive) and USB-based Wi-Fi connectivity for on-demand TV and gaming.

Make In India: China’s Huawei gets green light to make handsets for booming market

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies Co has won a key Indian government manufacturing approval...

By: Reuters | New Delhi | July 16, 2015 9:22 pm
Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies Co has won a key Indian government manufacturing approval, paving the way for it to become the first major Chinese brand to make handsets in one of the world’s biggest markets for mobile phones.
The green light from the Ministry of Home Affairs, confirmed by an official on Wednesday, comes 19 months after Huawei first applied for a manufacturing licence, amid wrangling over national security concerns. It also marks a significant boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign.

India has 975 million mobile phone subscriptions in a fast-growing market. Close to 150 million subscribers use mostly imported, Internet-friendly smartphones, a number that’s forecast to grow about 26 percent annually until 2019, according to a recent HSBC report.
“India is an important overseas market for Huawei,” Allen Wang, president of Huawei’s consumer business group in India, told Reuters on Wednesday. “We aim to become a top three brand in India within three years.”
A spokesman for Huawei in India said separately the firm had not received official communication from the government, and declined to comment further.
Pending final approvals, Huawei would become the first big-name Chinese phone maker to manufacture hardware in India’s growing market to helping compensate for slowing growth at home. Xiaomi Inc, China’s leading smartphone, maker earlier this month reported a sequential drop in half-year sales.

Huawei already has research and development operations in India, and manufactures for export in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Setting up local research and production centres is seen as key to helping Chinese firms offer top-end features at even lower cost to India’s price-sensitive consumers.
The green light for Huawei comes two months after Prime Minister Modi visited China in an effort to promote stronger business ties. China’s ambassador to India told Reuters earlier this year that tough security reviews and visa restrictions were slowing investment, despite Modi’s promise to roll out the red carpet to foreign business.
India has been a testing ground for Chinese firms like Lenovo Group Ltd and others, trying out new products and strategies. Chinese producers are beginning to win market share from better-known rivals such as South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co and homegrown supplier Micromax.

Foxconn, the Taiwanese tech group that assembles the Apple Inc iPhone in China, is also looking to open 10-12 plants in India by 2020 and is in talks to manufacture the iPhone in the country.
