India, China among 8 countries allowed to buy Iranian oil: US

November 05, 2018

India, China among 8 countries allowed to buy Iranian oil: US:
India, China and Japan are among eight countries temporarily exempted from the United States sanctions for buying Iranian oil as they showed significant reduction in oil purchase from the Persian Gulf country after the Trump administration reimposed crippling sanctions on Tehran, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday.

Pompeo vowed that the US will be 'relentless' in pressuring Iran as he announced the list of the countries temporarily exempted from the sanctions during a press conference broadcast live.

Italy, Greece, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey also figure in the list released by Pompeo.

The US on Monday imposed 'the toughest ever' sanctions on a defiant Iran aimed at altering the Iranian regime's 'behaviour'.

The sanctions cover Iran's banking and energy sectors and reinstate penalties for countries and companies in Europe, Asia and elsewhere that do not halt Iranian oil imports.

While the US had previously wanted countries including India to completely halt oil purchases from Iran by November 4, it seems to have relented considering the havoc the move to completely take out Iranian supplies from the market would have had on prices.

India, the world's third-biggest oil consumer, meets more than 80 per cent of its oil needs through imports. Iran is its third-largest supplier after Iraq and Saudi Arabia and meets about 10 per cent of total needs.

Currently, India pays its third largest oil supplier in euros using European banking channels.

In May, President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the 2015 landmark Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) terming it as 'disastrous'.

Under the Obama-era deal, involving five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany, Iran agreed to stop its nuclear programme in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.

After the US' withdrawal from the deal, Trump signed fresh sanctions against Iran and warned countries against any cooperation with Tehran over its controversial nuclear weapons programme.

Iran has dismissed these charges and maintains that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.

Iranian oil is a lucrative buy for refiners as the Persian Gulf nation provides 60 days of credit for purchases, terms not available from suppliers of substitute crudes -- Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Nigeria, and the US. -- PTI

We have already been thru sanctions once after our nuke test. On the oil matter, while US was still deciding whether to put sanctions on us, our oil companies went ahead and already placed orders with Iran for the month of november in ever high qty.
On arms deal our Def Min said very well. She basically showed finger to USA. We dont care. We are growing and we will keep on growing on our terms. And sanctions? Their own companies would start crying when we stop them from doing business in our country as a retaliation just like they are now.
And on china front, go ahead, see if they care.
India and China may have a lot of differences but on trade matters in WTO, we have always stood together and gathered more countries to support our cause.

China and India dont need US permission to buy Iranian oil. We are free to do whatever we liked.

You want sanction? Bring it on. The world dont belong just for USA.
India and China have the economic strength to resist sanctions, most other countries don't. US Sanctions nearly destroyed Russia's economy, and they will harm Iran unfortunately. Still, this is good news for India and China.

pakistan and india alone just putting sanctions on american fast food joints like McDonalds, KFC etc would make USA reconsider any sanctions for buying from Iran.

Americas greatest export to the world as of right now is Apple, Hollywood and fast food culuture.

times have changed, No one gives USA that much signanficance any more compared to the cold war era.

iran after decades of sanctions and all these political deals and then back tracking from the West over the years is still as strong as ever and giving a bloody noise to Saudis and Israels in the middle east

the thing is countries like iran and Russia have the drive and national pride that makes their people willing to withstand extreme hardship to stand up to adversaries. Most countries don't have those qualities.

truth is american fast food joints make an absolute killing in our countries and middle east. sanctioning them would send a strong enough message
