Daud was a hot headed nationalist but lacking political acumen and the crap facing the country started with him.

Zia was an opportunist who was a given a golden opportunity to rule Pakistan when the soviets invaded Afghanistan. He is also the founder of the militancy that ills Pakistan today.

Actually not strictly speaking -- it was ZA Bhutto who started the Afghanistan forward policy. All successive governments have essentially continued with that. I think on Afghanistan there is a wide consensus in bother the civil and military establishments and now I guess in the people too.
