What's new

Holey Artisan Bakery has just reopened.

Saw this today - it's definitely a 'positive' end to a tragic story.

Real shame, they aren't in their own premises and are instead going to operate out of a Meena bazaar/Agora/Swapno type of superstore and have their own little corner.

Holey Artisan Bakery has began operating again after moving to Rangs Arcade in Gulshan 2.
Holey Artisan Bakery has officially reopened its operations in Gulshan after six months of the militant attack. The cafe’s owners maintained their determination to reopen their door for the second half of 2016 after being the victim of history’s worst militant attack of the country.

Throughout the second half of 2016, the cafe’s owners maintained their determination to one day reopen their doors, albeit at a different site.

The worst terrorist attack in the history of Bangladesh received global attention for its international casualties and was the first public statement from Islamic State on operating in Bangladesh.

In the aftermath of the attack, the cafe – in a show of fortitude and solidarity – began operating from a neighbouring restaurant in Gulshan 2.

After law enforcement agencies finished their investigation of the premises, they returned the keys to the owners. They pledged to turn it into a residential complex, and stated they would not resume operating on the same premises that experienced such a terrible, inhumane act.

Holey Artisan Bakery is now operating on a more secure, smaller scale inside Gourmet Bazaar at Rangs Arcade on North Gulshan Avenue.

On July 1, 2016, after Iftar in the Islamic sacred month of Ramadan, five armed militants stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery in Baridhara. They took the bakery staff and guests hostage and killed 20 – including 18 foreigners – before law enforcement teams laid siege in the early hours of July 2, killing the terrorists in a firefight which destroyed much of the premises.

A positive mindset from the owners. And I also think this should stay opened for the sake of all memories it carries of the victims. People wont forget them when they see or hear about the brand. Good move.

Business-wise this is a great decision as well - at least for now.

People just want the baked goods (maybe to take away) - they don't want to linger and sip tea. Households will send the errand-boy to pick up some bread or pastries.

In that sense they have the potential to do as well as before. Their baked pastries are some of the best in Dhaka....

The best way (IMHO) to remember the brave victims (some of Dhaka's most promising young adults) is to make the original Holey Artisan Bakery a memorial - a place where children visit to learn the evil of terrorism and the price we paid in blood.

That sad moment in our history should be a teaching moment for our children.
