As many as 79 private Universities in the Punjab province have been declared as “ghost” universities by the HEC. These ghost universities are institutes that are registered on paper but have no physical existence. Some even have ghost teachers and students.

An inquiry committee has been set up which will take action against 4 other universities aside from the 79 ghost ones. Federal Higher Education Commission (HEC) has declared over 100 institutes, universities and colleges illegal in the Punjab province.

79 Confirmed Fake, 15 Others To Be Investigated
The previously mentioned 79 ghost universities also issue fake degrees to students. The first phase of the investigation, led by Punjab HEC, found 79 of the total 100 universities were ghost universities. The second phase will have them investigate 15 educational institutes affiliated with universities.

Due to complaints by various students from these so called “educational” institutes, a party of senior vice chancellors has been constituted to investigate 4 private universities in Lahore alone.

These are:

  • Lahore Leads University
  • Global Institute
  • Superior University
  • University of South Asia

Dr. Nizam-ud-Din, Chairman HEC, says that students have been barred from going to any college or institute affiliated with a private university for admission.

Fake/Illegal Educational Institutes in Other Areas
It should be noted that there are a number of other fake universities/educational institutes in other provinces as well, according to the list provided by the HEC.

There are 36 of these in Sindh, 3 in AJK, 11 in KPK and 4 of them are in Islamabad only.

The complete list is available on their website and can be accessed here.
