Obama greets India on 60th Republic Day

WASHINGTON: Greeting people of India on the occasion of its 60th Republic Day, President Barack Obama has said India and the United States have a Obama strong shared belief in the values of liberty, pluralism and religious tolerance.

"I send my warmest wishes on behalf of the American people to the people of India and to those here in America and around the world who are celebrating Republic Day.

"As the world's largest democracies, US and India have a strong shared belief in the values of liberty, pluralism, and religious tolerance," Obama said while greeting on the occasion of India's Republic Day.

"This Republic Day is particularly special because it marks India's Diamond Jubilee," he said, adding that in the 60 years since the Indian Constitution was adopted, we have built a strong and vibrant partnership.

Obama had invited Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as his presidency's first State Guest. He hosted Singh at the White House on November 24 on his first State Dinner.

"I was pleased that Prime Minister Singh was the honoured guest for the first state dinner of my Presidency. It was a chance to celebrate the great and growing partnership between our two Nations, and the friendship between our peoples," Obama said.

'Honored to be born as an Indian'

Paresh Rawal (Actor): Republic Day has given us the right to talk whatever we want and do whatever we want. The meaning of true Republic Day will be reflected in my forth-coming film ‘Road To Sangam’. I am shooting on Republic Day.

Purab Kohli (Actor): I will be in Delhi on 26 th January. If I get some time off, I want to go and watch the parade. It’s a great day for all Indians. It’s a day when everyone put aside his or her religion, cast, creed and differences to be one.

Sukhwinder Singh (Singer): Republic day has given us the true meaning of independence. It made us free citizen of the largest democracy in the world.

Kunal Kapoor (Actor): It is obviously one of the most important days in our history. It is on this day that our constitution came into being and India truly became sovereign. It is also significant because it’s a day, when our martyrs and other acts of bravery are honored. Well, this Republic Day I will be in a workshop. I think its great way to celebrate the day, doing what you enjoy the most.

Shibani Kashyap (Singer): On Republic Day, I will be taking a flight back from Bangladesh and I will be landing in Delhi. As every year, I look forward to attending beating the retreat. Republic Day is as special as Independence Day because India became sovereign republic and therefore democratic country this makes me truly proud to be an Indian.

Siddharth (Actor): I wish more people should pay their taxes. I hate fake patriotism; I prefer practical things that make a difference. Paying taxes and helping people is much better than just standing when you hear the national anthem. I will be shuttling between shoot and promotion of forthcoming movie ‘Striker’ on Republic Day. I don’t single out 26 January or 15 August to feel patriotic. I do it every day.

Aditya Narayan (Singer/Actor): This day gives us an opportunity to sit back and realize how truly lucky we are to be ‘Indians’. I will be definitely taking part in our society’s flag hosting ceremony and have the Tri-color flag proudly displaying on my attire and cars.

Anjana Sukhani (Actor): Seeing those brave soldiers march-past during the parade, it’s such a patriotic feeling. I am getting nostalgic of all the flag hosting that I used to be part of as a kid. I am going to be glued to TV to watch the parade. I wish I was in Delhi to actually experience it!

Divya Dutta (Actor): Republic Day means very special to me. A day that reminds us that India and our freedom is so precious. I love watching Republic Day parade since childhood. As children, we used to pack some goodies and go to watch the parade at Rajpath. You feel so beautiful and patriotic.

Mrinalini Sharma (Model/Actor): Republic Day signifies the transition of India from British dominance to democracy. It gives us the right to call India ‘our’ country.

Sophie Choudhary (Actor/ Singer): The patriotic fervor of the people on this day brings the whole country together even. It reminds us of the independence our forefathers struggled and fought for. I feel proud of my country every single day but perhaps a little extra on 26 January. I still haven’t finalized my plans for Republic Day but either I will take off for a religious place; or I will enjoy the day with my family and friends.

Hansika Motwani (Actor): The constitution stands firm behind every Indian and empowers him with the rights by the greatest country in the world-India. As an Indian, this day is really important for me. I will be at home watching parade on TV.

Eesha Koppikar (Actor): For a country, which is so diverse, so interwoven in its traditions and culture to adopt the constitution in all its glory and to survive the test of time, it is indeed an honor to be an Indian. I am a proud Indian and we are a republic, developing, democratic and above all a peace loving country. I will watch the parade on TV.

Manoj Bajpayee (Actor): There is no specific plan, as I will be working. However, I will definitely watch Republic Day celebration on television. All of us should respect our constitution and follow it.

Vidya Malvade (Actor): What makes Republic day special to me is the fact that despite a massive diversity we have still held on to the greatest civil purpose of humanity first. I will be working on 26 January but will attend the flag hosting in my area in morning.
