The mark of success for any nation is how well its people are doing economically, socially and morally. All of these factors determine one’s living standards. And on all these fronts, Indonesians are better off today than they were 15 years ago.
As the nation celebrates its 68th birthday, it can stand tall in the community of nations. The country is a member of the G-20, a group of the largest economies in the world; it is the third-largest democracy in the world and a fast-growing market. Its people are among the happiest anywhere.
As President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono notes, the country’s ethnic and religious diversity is one of its strengths. But for us to leverage this strength, we must promote greater tolerance and social harmony, which have been eroded in recent years.
Indonesia, many citizens think, is now free, and its people are also free. But looking around us, the country is still held in bondage by a host of problems and challenges. These include poverty, poor education, poor healthcare and lack of infrastructure.
Addressing and solving these problems will take leadership, commitment and resolve. It will require sacrifices and some tough decisions which might lead to short-term pain.
On Independence Day, many people also remember those who have fought and spilled blood for the country. The term “heroes” calls to mind those who fought and won independence for the nation nearly seven decades ago. But in truth, we need new kinds of heroes today: individuals who can take the lead in many diverse fields and have lives that younger Indonesians can look up to as role models.
Independence Day is a time to celebrate the nation’s achievements as much as it is a time to reflect on what lies ahead. We have come far as a nation, but we still have a long road ahead of us.

Indonesian Consulate General in Karachi held Opening Ceremony of Sports Week to celebrate the 68th Independence of the Republic of Indonesia
The Opening Ceremony of Sports Week to celebrate the 68th Independence of the Republic of Indoneisa in Saturday morning of June 8, 2013, at the premises of the Indonesian Consulate General in Karachi this year was very vibrant amid high enthusiasm of the participating Indonesian nationals in Karachi. The event started at 10:00 am local time and was attended by the Indonesian Consul General in Karachi (Mr. Rossalis R. Adenan) and his wife as well as all staffs of the Indonesian Consulate General along with their families and Indonesian nationals in Sindh Province including Indonesian students studying at the Islamic University Binoria Karachi, Indonesian nationals working for multinational companies in Karachi, and Indonesian nationals who are married to Pakistanis and their families.
Prior to the Opening Ceremony, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 68th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia at the Indonesian Consulate General presented a preparatory report for the event including various games that will be contested during the sports week.
The Indonesian Consul General in his opening remarks, among others stated that the sports week celebration on the occasion of the 68th Independence of the Republic of Indonesia was held to pay homage to the services and sacrifices rendered by the Indonesian national heroes in their struggle for independence, and to rekindle the spirit of unity and nationalism among Indonesian nationals in Sindh Province. He further stressed that the aims of holding Sports Week is not only for winning but rather for fostering a sense of brotherhood and unity among Indonesian nationals in Sindh Province. The Indonesian Consul General also appealed all Indonesian nationals in Sindh province to raise their vigilance and always abide by the prevailing laws and regulations beside avoiding unnecessary movement in troubled areas of the city keeping in view of the current law and order situation in Karachi.
The opening ceremony of the Sports Week was initiated by beating of the big Gong by the Indonesian Consul General, followed by offering prayer and group photos with of all participants. After the opening ceremony, all the participants proceeded to the Royal Rodale Club to play bowling games in which the Indonesian Consul General threw out the first ball to mark the start of the game.
The whole series of the event were carried out as scheduled in a lively atmosphere of togetherness and reflected bonds of brotherhood among Indonesian nationals in Sindh Province. (Source: Indonesian Consulate General in Karachi)
