Indian defence ministry asks HAL to speed up copter production

With the Indian armed forces projecting the need for some 700 helicopters – light utility and armed – the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has asked the public sector giant Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to ramp up production, speed up existing under-development projects and start out-sourcing work, Indian media reported.

The HAL, headquartered at Bengaluru, produces some 22-24 advanced light helicopters (ALH), the Dhruv, annually and some 200 of these are flying; however, the requirement is huge.

In the second phase, rapid production of light utility helicopters (LUH) and light combat helicopter (LCH) will start. Prototypes of both are ready but need operational clearance.

The MoD wants the HAL to produce up to 85-90 copters per annum of these three types – the Dhruv, LUH and LCH – said sources, while adding that outsourcing of some work had been suggested on the lines of global manufacturing practices.

Some 100 copters are needed annually to meet the needs of the three armed forces, the Central Armed Police Forces, the Coast Guard and smaller friendly nations. While, the HAL continues to be a major player, some of the production can be given to a selected private partner.

The three armed services need 484 of the LUH-type to replace Cheetah/Chetak fleet of helicopters for which the army requires 259, IAF 125, and Indian navy around 100 such helicopters equipped with anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities.

The army and the IAF need some 180 attack helicopters. The coast guard and other paramilitary forces have their own requirements which are nearly 100 copters.

The HAL has planned to expand capacity and a new facility at Tumkur, some 100 km from Bengaluru, will start production in 2018.

Yes Nasar is there and India have Prahaar and Pragati etc
but aviation sector will play a key role in troops movement. Unfortunately Pak have no program in pipe line for helicopter production while the demand is high.least a light /medium utility copter program can fulfill Pak civil military needs. Joint venture is the need of time in this sector.

These media walas print anything with spice for TRPs.

The LCH and LUH in addition to Ka226T soon are to get under production , and a new facility is being built for it. So all the 4 types [ALH, LUH, LCH and Ka226T ] see a cumulative production of ~150 choppers.

This is 2015 news, when the work on facility started. The facility should be ready by this year end.

no challenge. our helo requirements are far less than India's.

Indian army personnel are double in count so obviously their requirement for helicopters is also twice then ours.

Anyways Pakistan needs to replace their Mi17 fleet. There has been lots of deadly crash involving them.

Do not underestimate HAL, it might seem funny to mock Indian defence manufacturers to you, but your defence establishment doesn't seem to share your humour.
Each military equipment being produced is a threat, please understand that.

Our defence establishment is more worried about having to feed starving indian troops who desert india and cross the border just to beg for a decent meal!

sala dushman mila bhi to kitna zanani dushman mila! :hitwall:

Airbus is coming to gujarat not only for choper production but for a aviation constorium including Fighter planes and civil planes. They have a partner in form of reliance with huge financial muscles. LCH is going to give india a big advantage in mountain warfare.

Bharti media truly lives in the world of Bollywood & fake crap.

i think turkey is currently carrying an indigenous project. wouldn't be great if we join that project and opt for a local production line ?
