The fallout after the #Gulshan terror attack has followed a predictable path. In the two weeks since the atrocity, we have seen a call for hypervigilence with security agencies inventing new phone apps to anonymously report suspicious activities. We have seen apolitical figures such as #ZakirNaik and his Peace TV being linked to terror. We have seen the government instruct the masajid to start speaking about terrorism.
These styles are all to be expected, being the normal practices of a police state that wants to cling to power and stop the emergence of an alternative system. So you will see people asked to spy on each other in order to create a climate of fear in which people self censure. If non-political figures such as Zakir Naik are targeted- then what message does that send out about people who are politically active? The masajid will slowly become voice boxes for government propaganda. Anyone who has studied the situation of the Muslims in the Middle East under decades of tyrannical rule will be all too familiar with this pattern of behaviour.
At the same time there is a global ideological struggle between the dominant western secular ideology and an emerging Islamic ideology. In that struggle, the west is trying to secularism Islam so that it fits in nicely under their hegemony- much like modern day Christianity and Judaism. They target one thought- political Islam- over all others as this is the means by which Islam practically becomes manifest in society. So we see the most vicious attack reserved for anyone calling for the Islamic political system of khilafah. Indeed this is where the likes of ISIS, al Qaeda, Boko Haram and others fit in. Their mindless atrocities are used to directly link the Islamic concept of khilafah to violence such that people are so repulsed by the violence that they also reject any form of political Islam. They throw the baby out with the bath water as they say.
If we understand that this is a deliberate ploy used by the West, then as Muslims with intellect, we need to realise that we can’t be silent about Islam rather we need to talk about it even more. Islam is not the problem. Rather the absence of Islam is the problem. The anarchy that we see today has been present and growing since the fall of the Ottoman Khilafah in 1924. There has been no Khalifah to be a shepherd to the diverse peoples in the Muslim lands. There has been no Sultan to establish the justice of Islam over them and no one to settle their disputes. There has been no Imam to be a shield against external invaders or behind whom the Muslims fight to liberate lands from occupation. There has been no Imam to defend the honour of the Prophet (saws) when he was caricatured in the name of freedom of speech. There has been no Amir ul Mumineen to be a voice against the horrific capitalist policies of global powers, both against Muslims and against the weaker peoples of the world.
It is this lack of #Islam and the chaos and frustration that results from it, that can drive some to falsely take the law into their own hands and commit acts of violence. Bring back Islam and the chaos will vanish.
Yes we mourn the dead and voice anger at such incidents, but we can never lose sight of the world we live in today, the environment in which such actions occur and the far greater violence that has a hand in generating these acts of violence. We must not confuse the obligatory Islamic ruling system (khilafah) which the Prophet (saws) left us with and which was followed by Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali and the khulafah that followed, with the likes of ISIS. Just because they claim to be Islamic doesn’t make them so. Indeed any factual study of ISIS will show their actions have nothing to do with Islam and have consistently only benefited the enemies of Islam and harmed the call for Islam globally.
Allah describes the solution to our current state of fear and insecurity precisely when He says,
‘Allah has promised those who have believed among you and do righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, [for] they worship Me, not associating anything with Me. But whoever disbelieves after that – then those are the defiantly disobedient.’ [TMQ An-Nur 24:55]
Our solution lies in Islam. Indeed all of humanity's solution lies in Islam. It is thus imperative for us to follow in the footsteps of our Prophet (saws) and his sahaba in their method to establish the #khilafahrashida once again as the Prophet (saws) said:
"There will be Prophethood for as long as Allah wills it to be, then He will remove it when He wills, then there will be Khilafah on the Prophetic method and it will be for as long as Allah wills, then He will remove it when He wills, then there will be biting Kingship for as long as Allah Wills, then He will remove it when He wills, then there will be oppressive kingship for as long as Allah wills, then he will remove it when He wills, and then there will be Khilafah upon the Prophetic method" and then he remained silent.
