Two Greek F-16 jets intercepted two F-16 jets belonging to the Turkish Air Force on Saturday, according to a press release from the Turkish General Staff Headquarters. According to the report, the fighter jets were on a training flight in international air space over the Mediterranean Sea.

Turkish General Staff said that the Turkish military planes were intercepted by the Greek planes for a total of 2 minutes and 40 seconds, prompting the Turkish jets to respond in kind.

Additionally, three Greek F-16 jets intercepted a Turkish Maritime Patrol Aircraft over the Aegean Sea in international air space.

This interception adds to the lingering tension between the two NATO allies over the Aegean Sea, a region which remains a major source of friction between the two neighbors.

Meanwhile, Syrian air missile defense systems maintained a radar lock on a Turkish F-16 jet conducting a patrol flight over the Hatay-Osman-Gaziantep provinces by the border.

Its getting interesting

Greece says 10 nautical miles, Turkey says 6. Known issue.

In 1974, Greek junta made a fateful decision not to respond militarily to Turkish landings in Northern Cyprus. If Greece would have used its military in 1974 then all the Aegean islands near the Turkish coast would be under Turkish administration today. The islands along the Turkish coast should belong to Turkey.

It always confused me why all those islands near a Turkey were Greek territory, still does actually.

Turkey didn't have a strong navy in WW1. It ordered a navy from the British before WW1 but when WW1 started the Brits didn't give us the ships and they also didn't give back our money. This meant we were very weak on sea. The Italians and French stole all of those islands and the Turks on those islands had to flee. Years later when Italy lost in WW2 they had to give those islands to Greece for reparation.

Ottoman, Safavi and Mughal Empires were land empires with no or very weak navies. Even Chinese under Mao did not march into Taiwan island in 1948 to end the Chiang Kai-shek rule and they still face Taiwan problem.

Ok take them back now, Turkey has more legitimate claim on those islands than Northern Cyprus tbh. Maybe that can actually be a part of a peaceful resolution for the Cyprus issue, all the islands back to Turkey for returning Cyprus to a united country, I'm just spitballing here of course. I admit I may not be very educated in this area.

True or not, this doesn't really have to do with the problems at hand or the incident though.

Cyprus is a completely separate issue. This more or less only has to do with the delimitation of Greek national airspace.

greeks are smart not to go to war

Nope smartest thing Greece could do at the moment.

Stage one, declare war on Turkey.

Stage two, Complete and absolute surrender 5 minutes later.

Stage three, debt payment...sorry see Turkey we are a subject nation ;)
