ISLAMABAD: The federal government is providing funds for the construction of 60 small, medium, large and recharge dam projects in the country through Federal Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) aimed at providing water for irrigation and drinking purposes.

According to sources privy to the information, the accumulative live storage capacity of these dams was about 8,683,699 acre-feet whereas as many as 17 dams’ projects were likely to be completed during the current fiscal year (FY).

Some of the projects include small dams in Tehsil Dobandi, Gulistan Killa, Bhundaro storage dam, Dosi dam Pasni, Darah dam Khuzadar, Mangi dam Quetta, Mara Tangi dam Loralai, Tuk dam Tehsil Wadh, Anjeeri dam Nushko, Azdhakhoi dam, Baghi dam Naushki, delay actions dams in Siaro Hazar Ganji Nal, a small dam at Sardari Goz Darkhalo, small dam Kunji Ferzabad, and Sukleji dam etc.

Work on other projects including Mohmad, Diamer Basha, Kurram Tangi, Nai Gaj and Naulong dams was also being carried out.
Sources said it was a fact that per capita water availability in Pakistan which in 1951 was 5,260 m3 per annum, was constantly decreasing and at present had reduced to less than 1,000 m3 per annum per capita due to an ever-increasing population.

They said that WAPDA has prepared a comprehensive plan to address water scarcity issue by storing floodwater during high flow season and utilise the same during the lean season.

In last decade, WAPDA completed Mangla Dam Raising (2.88 MAF), Gomal Zam Dam (0.892 MAF), Satpara Dam (0.053 MAF) and Darawat Dam (0.089 MAF) for water storage.

Now, the authority was also planning to construct Kurram Tangi Dam Stage-II (0.90 MAF), Chiniot Dam (0.85 MAF), Shyok Dam (5.0 MAF), Akhori Dam (6.0 MAF), Dudhnial Dam (1.00 MAF), Skardu Dam (3.20 MAF) and Sindh Barrage (2.00 MAF) to cope with the issues of water shortage in the country.

Nobody interested in this news.

You should be interested in this news. We need 600 or 1200 or 1800 or more! not 60. The UK has 570 reservoirs and they play a key roll in water management. When we have monsoon rains we will fill these up, and use the water the rest of the year.

FYI the UK is 4 times smaller than Pakistan and has ample rainfall all year around. Yet they have these reservoirs.

This should have been done in 90s meaning we have 30 years of catching up to do due to incompetence on PPP and PMLN. They focused on expensive oil based plants bcz they got more commission from it. We need shot, medium and long term plans for water and energy management. I just hope we are not too late.

Its not all about building new dams though. We as a nation need to look at population management too. Far too many people living in Punjab with little city planning causing illnesses and death. Underground water tables are being poisoned with chemical spillage and waste water which means less available water for drinking and farming in some areas. We can do with more dams if its not going to be from borrowed money from IMF or China as this weakens the currency but popular with political parties as it showcases there achievements. This method also means that our existing loans are more expensive over the years.

In my opinion we need to work on:

1. Population control through better education and contraception
2. Monitor and fine chemical factories that spill chemical waste especially in Faisalabad- more available water.
3. Better water management allowing farmers extra water from peak periods of the year- less flood damage.
4. Ensure all dams are fully operational. This will ensure Wapda produces more electricity and can afford to maintain and build more small dams.
5. Cleaning silt on time- more water capacity in dams and canals

I'm an overseas pakistani and everytime I go Pakistan I see these problems that are getting worst every year.

does most of the rain come in a short time span?

the UK is in the northern forest green belt. Take a look at a map of forest cover.
There is one in the north and another in the south. As above so below.
the people in the UK have stolen from Genesis and thus from God.

Every government buys off Punjab votes by this corruption scams

Good news, need to work on more dams for water storage for efficient use and water management
