Popular Science: Gaofen 4, The World's Most Powerful GEO Spy Satellite
"The GEO orbit of Gaofen 4 means that it can maintain continuous coverage of Chinese territory and surrounding areas. It's also the most powerful GEO satellite, good enough to track aircraft carriers in near real time from space."

It is very funny to those who think they know of better wording than the editor at Popular Science, whose magazine has been translated into over 30 languages and is distributed to at least 45 countries.
The issue is not if it is possible to build a satellite that is capable of tracking targets.

The issue is that there is a world of TECHNICAL difference between monitoring and tracking. PopSci has to write for a large audience that is %90 composed of lay people. For those of us that belongs in the %10, we recognize and tolerate loose language in the interest of educating the general public.

Gaofen-3 is scheduled for Aug. 2016.

The country has budgeted 55(or 60 the exact figure has slipped my memory) billion yuan for the Gaofen family of satellites.

Gaofen is the most advanced GEO spy satellite in the world and as it says in the article can track aircraft carriers.

US carriers have no where to hide.

How ? What make the aircraft carrier different ?

We have been playing hide and seek far longer than your PLAN have at playing on the Liaoning.

OK,let's forget about the words of track , monitor, and etc. We mean China is capable of following and knowing where the AC is with GF-4, in the case of DF21D is needed. LOL
NO regret even to trade with a "warning"
same goes for me:china:

Please....

The PopSci crew was just being sensationalists and entertaining when they added something that they knew would be for shock value -- an aircraft carrier.

When you track something, you assign what we call a 'critical characteristic' to that something, which then change that something to target. That 'critical characteristic' can be a brief case that a man is carrying. Or to a police officer, a man wearing a hoodie jacket would be interesting. Or if you are a member of traffic, a truck's size would be a 'critical characteristic'. This is where the PopSci crew does not say about what make the aircraft carrier different from other vessels. Sure you can say what those unique things are, but does GF-4 satellite know ? So just because the satellite's sensor is outstanding, that does not mean it can recognize those 'critical characteristics'.

Apparently Chinese submarines are quiet enough to utterly humiliate the US Navy
I guess that I posted was too technically complex for you ? Sorry, but I cannot draw pictures.
