France's Alstom wins $3 billion Indian Railways contract - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: French engineering company Alstom has won a contract worth around 200 billion rupees ($3 billion) to supply Indian Railways with 800 electric locomotives and set up a local manufacturing plant, a railways spokesman said on Tuesday.

The contract is one of the largest awarded to a foreign firm since India last year opened up limited parts of its state-owned railways to 100 percent foreign direct investment, and comes as the government tries to modernise its vast but outdated rail network.

US company General Electric said on Monday it had won a deal worth $2.6 billion to supply India with diesel locomotives over the next 11 years.

Picture of transportation will change completely if government allow private players in railways for transportation just like in aviation sector.

If you thought Defense was Big this is way way wayyyyyyyyyyyyy Bigger...

$137 billion is to be spent in next 4 years, this is just $ 5.6 billion, centralized signalling, tracks integrated transport and heavy freighters.

These are the contemporary Freighter Diesel electric Engines from GE

and this is the one on offer from Alstom. The Prima II

Will India get the tech or just import?
Anyway it is good for u,good improvement.

So who exactly got the order ?
GE won order for marhaura plant for 700 locomotives (4,500 HP) and 300 (6,000 HP) locomotives.
Alstom has won order for Madhepura plant for 12000 HP 8 axle electric locomotives.
Both locos are for Eastern DFC.
A consortium of Hitachi, Kawasaki and Mitsubishi has already won order for 200 locomotives rated at 9000 HP.

ES 44AC model (rated at 4400 HP).

For Electric locomotive project, 2 locomotives are proposed
1. 12000 HP Bo-Bo+Bo-Bo (8 axle coupled loco units), for which ALSTOM Prima 2 has reportedly won the competition (Unit cost around INR 27 Crore). The locomotives are for Eastern DFC (Ludhiana Dankuni Section)

2. 9000 HP Co-Co (6 axle) locomotives for Western DFC (JNPT Mumbai to Dadri). For this locomotive Japanese consortium of Hitachi, Kawasaki has won the tender. 200 locos will be produced under this project.
