France to build two Mistral class carriers for Russia - People's Daily Online July 24, 2010

France will construct two Mistral-class helicopter carriers for Russia, a senior Russian Navy official said Friday.

"Russia will buy or build four Mistral-class ships. Delegations in Paris are discussing the 2+2 scheme," the admiral said.

Initially, Moscow planned to purchase one French Mistral carrier and built three more in partnership with the country's naval shipbuilder DCNS. But following bilateral talks were more focused on the 2+2 scheme.

The official expressed hope that Russian experts will learn how the vessels are built in France, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Many experts claimed the purchase was a chance for Russia to get access to advanced technologies in naval building.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on June 9 the deal was far from being signed because there were many disputed questions.

The Mistral-class warship is capable of deploying 16 helicopters, four landing barges, up to 70 armored vehicles with 13 battle tanks, and some 450 personnel.

The Minstral is very advanced but the biggest reason for the purchase is because the Russian high command felt that a ship of this class would have helped Russian forces land quicker in Georgia if such a ship existed at the time. If the Russians were to built a similar ship it would take a very long time because not only would engineers have to design the ship but also build or modifiy a shipyard and only then would the construction begin, this, of course, would take years. The fact that Russia gets access to French technology is a bonus.

Surprising that the Russkies have not developed this technology before nor have built such kind of ships.:woot:

Has Russia or former USSR purchased any naval ships from a foreign country in the past?

Yeah, now i understand why the Gorshkov is so delayed. It also explains why the Russians could never calculate the cost properly. Should have gone directly to the French instead.
