Bangladesh has for the first time exported an oceangoing high-speed, multipurpose container vessel to the United Kingdom (UK).

Ananda Shipyard and Slipways Ltd handed over the ship to its UK buyer, Enzian Shipping Company Ltd, on Tuesday at an event held at the InterContinental in Dhaka.

The 364 feet long, 54 feet wide and 27 feet deep ship has a 4,130 horsepower engine and can reach speeds of up to 12.5 nautical miles/hour.

The ship, with a capacity of 6,100 deadweight tonnage, was built entirely in Narayanganj's Meghnaghat.

Talking with Dhaka Tribune, Dr Tariqul Islam, executive director of Ananda Group, said: “In 2008 we first exported a ship to Denmark and now we have exported to the UK. It is also the first time that the UK has imported a ship from Bangladesh.”
“This vessel can transport any kind of dangerous cargo, except nuclear waste, and it is an ice class vessel that can move smoothly, breaking four feet of ice on the ocean. This ship also can run without a captain’s assistance in its engine room for up to 16 hours,” he added.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, who attended the handover ceremony as chief guest, said: "Bangladesh today has completed the export of a modern multipurpose container ship to the UK. This is a proud day for us all."

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the current government attaches great importance to the shipbuilding industry. Therefore, it has become easy to export ships for the private companies of Bangladesh. This sector will play a big role in the economy of Bangladesh soon,” the state minister added.

Great news but shipbuilding industry could have achieved faster growth. Not sure why it's not growing rapidly.

I am not familiar with the ship engines. But, only 4130 horsepower (HP) seems to be very small for such a large vessel. Can someone with mechanical background highlight the matter?

12.5 nautical miles per hour is also quite small.

I guess it's the cost of marine steel or some materials.

Nope.

The main problem is the 私生子 India-friendly government's refusal to

a) allow special financing for shipbuilders and
b) import raw materials (like marine ship plate) duty-free which is not made locally.

This 私生子 Hasina Govt. only listens to their master India and whatever India wants which is to not have shipbuilding flourish in Bangladesh. If it does, it will kill Indian shipbuilding, just like other sectors.

@bluesky bhai - 4000 HP is plenty for this 6100 DWT coaster ship to keep up 12 knots which is standard speed. It does not go to deep ocean route, only coastal and river routes.

BTW - this ship is by no means the first ocean-going ship from Bangladesh. Western Marine has made dozens of them and so have other yards (over ten large ones) in Meghnaghat, N'Ganj and Chittagong.

Primarily the cost of specialised steel that is needed I think. GoB did not reduce import duty on these and BD is only now has small capacity to produce these in country.

Additionally covid i suppose.

Here are the ships exported from Western Marine alone in the last decade (just a few). This includes waterjet propulsion ships and specialized orbital propulsion tugs. Slowed by Sanghi saajish.

When you source raw material from overseas, that also takes transit time. Over two months. That is a no-no in shipbuilding schedules.

I am surprised to see you writing kanji. 私生子 (Shiseiji) means illegitimate child in the Japanese language. I did not know this expression. I checked the dictionary to find the meaning.

I also believe this BAL govt is the illegitimate child of India and it will die out in the next election. You can expect it will never again rise in the land of Bangladesh.

However, I am noting the recent political polarization. Col. Oli Ahmed seems to have joined with President Badruddoza. They want to revive the real BNP of Zia.

I have also noted Oli Ahmed was telling that Jamaat is now with him/ his party. I expect many changes will continue until the election.

Note another point that when that stupid Begum Zia expelled the President of the country, Hasina took the opportunity to divide and win. Begum Zia is a total nut and a thief no less than Hasina Bibi.
