France has hit its highest recorded temperature - 45.9C (114.6F) - amid a heatwave in Europe that has claimed several lives.

The new record was measured in the southern village of Gallargues-le-Montueux. Before this year the previous record was 44.1C during a heatwave in 2003 that killed thousands.

Health Minister Agnès Buzyn warned that "everyone is at risk".

France's weather service has issued an unprecedented red alert for four areas.

Those are all in the south, but most of the country remains on orange alert, the second-highest level.

Meteorologists say hot air drawn in from northern Africa is responsible, caused by high pressure over central Europe and a storm stalling over the Atlantic.

In Gallargues-le-Montueux, Mayor Freddy Cerda said the record was something the village had to "put up with".

"We have to put up with this climate, and that's what the future holds for us, don't forget. The south of France is going to become tropical," he said.

Hundreds of schools were closed on Friday and water restrictions were in place.

Meteorologist Etienne Kapikian tweeted a map showing temperatures had risen above 40C for much of southern France.

The French weather service said temperatures of between 37C and 41C were expected across most of France on Saturday.

Swaths of the continent are experiencing extreme heat. Germany, France, Poland and the Czech Republic have all recorded their highest-ever June temperatures.

In Spain firefighters have been battling Catalonia's worst wildfires in 20 years. Eight provinces are on red alert while temperatures are expected to rise above 42C in many areas.

The Italian ministry of health has reported emergency levels of heat in 16 cities.

Loss of life
Several people are believed to have lost their lives as a result of the extreme temperatures, including two who died from suspected heatstroke in Spain.

One, a 17-year-old farm worker in Córdoba, went into convulsions after cooling down in the farm swimming pool, while an 80-year-old man died on a street in the northern city of Valladolid.

In France, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said a drowning was taking place every day and warned that the heat was making people "take risks".

On Thursday a 33-year-old roofer died after being taken ill as he worked on a building site in the western city of Rennes, where the temperature was 35C in the shade.

A six-year-old Syrian child was also in a serious condition after being thrown into the air by the force of a water jet from a fire hydrant that had been opened by residents in Saint Denis, north of Paris.

Ms Buzyn urged the public to avoid "risky behaviour" like leaving children in cars or jogging outside in the middle of the day.

In the UK, police warned people of the dangers of cooling off in rivers and lakes after a 12-year-old girl drowned in the River Irwell in Greater Manchester.

Is climate change to blame?

Linking a single event to global warming is complicated.

While extreme weather events like heatwaves occur naturally, experts say these will happen more often because of climate change.

Records going back to the late 19th Century show that the average temperature of the Earth's surface has increased by about one degree since industrialisation.

A climatology institute in Potsdam, Germany, says Europe's five hottest summers since 1500 have all been in the 21st Century.

Scientists are concerned that rapid warming linked to use of fossil fuels has serious implications for the stability of the planet's climate.

I guess no need to go Pakistan for the heatwave you can just go France and Spain in the future. @Vergennes @Vortex

Yes we are feeling the heat here. I’m about 60 km north of Paris. Working at Paris. Train running slow due to heat. Double triple heat in underground crowded metro... im loosing weight.

I should have built dams inside my body. Now I’m having water crisis :partay:

Tonight we went walking in the night my brother and me roughly 5 km walk.
We went near an ex airbase which was definitely closed few years ago. Guess what we found there. It’s outside of town. Big open field.

Yes a mirage exposed there. But that’s not the main and most interesting thing we discovered there !

No ! Yes ! We found there fresh air, small fresh cold wind. It was a great pleasure to feel the freshness and coldness of a pure air.

When came back home in the town, again heat, heat, water, ice cream, flooda, mago lassi....and skanjwi !!!

We decided to go there again tomorrow or next day.

On a serious note, yes several people lost their live due to high temperatures. Sad. But people should know that how to protect yourself. Drink water, avoid to going to under sun if possible etc.

But yes, when it is time, nobody could escape the appointment.

45.9C is absolutely insane.

The highest temperature I faced was 43C in Spain and Greece and it was like being in an oven in the shade. No-one was out during the day of course.

about a month ago I was in Pakistan for Eid and the temperature went from about 45C to 52C in matter of days. I got urinary tract infection due to the heat because I am not used to it. strange thing is the weather app would say 44C but the thermometer placed in the shade was showing 49.8 so clearly in the direct sun its 50C+ for sure.

I hope you are going well now.

Yes under direct sun light, temperatures go higher than what it is said by weather apps.

Drink water regularly, avoid soda drinks (coke, pepsi, jus, etc), sugar is not good in this situation.

Eat light....

My God. They will have deserts in Southern Europe this or next century.

Almost certainly proof of global warming in action.

Luckily the world seems to be moving to a renewable future as otherwise the world will probably become uninhabitable in a matter of decades.

In last 400000 years there were dozens of big and little global warmings and freezings - so humanity can do nothing about it. But every country can care about itself - take anti-deserting measures, take care about rivers and forests and so on.
May be someday Britain will have to turn Gulf Stream to avoid excessive warming.

Bro its 90°F(32°C) in Illinois and it feels like the apocalypse. I shudder to think what'll happen at 45°C

Temperatures estimated this afternoon ! 42C in Paris! That would be the highest temperature ever recorded in the capital.

Even in my city in india i have never faced 46 degrees in this summer.
Never thought to live a day when europe will be hot than my city.

And this was already predicted back in 2014 by the official French meteorological service, but for the year 2050, meaning this nightmare has just occurred 31 years earlier!

Then in 2017, the same service has predicted even worse for 2050, with temperatures 15 degrees Celsius hotter, reaching 55.3 degrees C:

1. Climat : 2050, l'alerte rouge 13 08 2017. Published on Oct 9, 2017.

The follow on will be dramatic
- A lot more snow will melt from greenland and Iceland and Antarctica
- More wild swings in weather across the world
- A lot of low lying areas will be under water - bangladesh in Asia, Florida in US and so many other significantly populous areas closer to sea
- Water shortages in large landmasses will make those areas uninhabitable
- Normal temperatures in north India, Pakistan, Middle east gets close to 50s today.. It will head to 60s...

I guess, it is going to get worse from here on... And we, humans, are one of the biggest contributors
