Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa on Thursday confirmed the death of three officers of the National Air Force, after falling to the ground a Dhruv helicopter in which the head of state usually moved at 16H00 local (21.00 GMT) in the sector San Roque, belonging to Huigra, central province of Chimborazo.
The President participated in the closing campaign in Quito (capital), act in which he was dismayed by the tragedy that “in addition to the country enlutar” affected him personally for “the loss of three great friends.”
The Defence Minister, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, said the aircraft covered the route between Guayaquil and Quito. The victims are two officers and one airman: Lt. Jorge Luis Flores, Captain Hector Caicedo and Cristian Unda second sergeant, respectively.
Meanwhile, Captain Fabian Pazos, the fourth member of the crew survived and was taken to a hospital in the city of Guayaquil (west).
The Minister added that an investigating board was formed to determine the causes of the accident, made up of representatives of the three branches of the armed forces and a civilian presidential adviser, who already traveled to the accident site, located in a mountainous area.
Meanwhile, the general commander of the Air Force, Enrique Velasco, declined to speculate on the incident.Likewise, Correa also asked that what happened is not provided for speculations and said that he did not plan to use the helicopter that day.
Finally, he explained that the aircraft was for short trips and always traveled the same crew. “With flying Lieutenant Flores took 4 years. Hector Caicedo was a presidential pilot but was a passenger. This accident mourned the motherland, “he said.
