India scrambles to stabilize falling rupee as crisis chatter roils markets

NEW DELHI — Indians returning from abroad bring nearly 3,000 flat screen televisions into the country a day, turning airport luggage belts into revolving electronics displays. A stiff new customs duty aims to sink that popular trade as officials scramble to halt a dizzying plunge in the rupee.

In a small way, the soon to be squelched trade in flat screen TVs illustrates India’s business and economic challenges. Despite the massive size of its market and high import tariffs, local companies have not become significant players in the consumer electronics manufacturing industry.

The growth of past years “shows what we are capable of,” he said.

So what's your problem maggot? It's our currency- we'll make it fall or rise as we please. Stick to your own country.

Or India could have a really courageous leader, who will push through politically unpopular but necessary structural reforms in India's economy.

Then India could be running on surpluses instead of deficits. And they won't have to worry about constantly having to cover their deficits every month.

oh PLEASE. We have done that in the past the right way. No 'reform' is truly a reform till it has consensus. Plus, several tricky issues- especially land acquisition and labor laws- really need that consensus to work. You guys did I with executive fiat- look at the kind of consequences you have to deal with.

India to become superpower by 2012: Kalam

UDHAGAMANDALAM: Former President A P J Abdul Kalam today lauded ISRO's scientists for successfully launching the PSLV-C9 to put 10 satellites in orbit.

Besides, the Chandrayaan-I unmanned moon mission by the year end would add another feather in the country's space programme, Kalam, here to participate in a school function, said.

India has become very advanced in space technology, he said, adding the country would become a superpower by 2012.

"Though I have envisioned India to become a superpower by 2020, the attitude and the confidence of the youth, to conquer everything in the right spirit, would make the country a global leader and super power within five years," Kalam told reporters.

Manmohan keen on making Mumbai a Shanghai

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who promised to turn Mumbai into a global metropolis like Shanghai during election campaign in Maharashtra, has sought practical ideas for implementing the proposal.
The Prime minister on Saturday chaired a two-hour long meeting of senior officials of his office, Union ministry of urban development and the Planning Commission to discuss details of the proposed National Mission on Urban Renewal.

He instructed the urban development ministry and the Planning Commission to come up with specific ideas and proposals in this regard. Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia also participated in the meeting.

Mr Singh also suggested that apart from all metros, at least one big city and one medium-sized town per state should be identified by the urban development ministry for a programme of infrastructure renewal.

He directed the Planning Commission to work out a funding plan that would draw on public and private funds for specific infrastructure and urban development projects, an official release said.

The urban renewal mission would focus on slum development, facilities for the urban poor, construction of roads and footpaths, development of urban facilities including sanitation, drinking water and power supply, public transport, parks and public spaces, legal reform, new construction projects and environment management, it added.

S&P maintains negative outlook on India's rating

MUMBAI | Tue Aug 20, 2013 6:47pm IST

(Reuters) - Standard & Poor's maintains its negative outlook on India's BBB- sovereign credit rating, the rating agency said in an emailed response to Reuters on Tuesday.

Recent measures taken to restrict capital outflows have increased uncertainty among foreign and domestic investors, said Kim Eng Tan, senior director, sovereign and international public finance, Asia Pacific at S&P.

"If the uncertainty continues, business financing conditions could deteriorate further and investment growth could slow further," Tan said.

"India's long term growth prospects could weaken on a sustained basis, with negative implications for the sovereign credit fundamentals," he said.

"It is, however, too early now to tell if this scenario will come to pass. This will be largely dependent on policymakers' reactions to these latest developments," Tan said.

India has the lowest investment grade rating and S&P is the only agency which has a negative outlook while Moody's and Fitch have a stable outlook on India.

I'm extremely happy seeing the Rupee and the Indian economic story collapse. Nobody deserved it more than India. They boast way too much and now it's come back to bite them on the backside.

Indians are extremely arrogant and obnoxious people, this economic collapse will definitely shut some of these jingoistic Indians up.

I agree. They have been the only people known to boast on a national level about things that are so far out of their reach that they just come off as jingoistic, arrogant, and over-confident high school dropouts.

What are you doing here? Did you already returned from the jewelry shop? Most Indian members are waiting in line at the jewelry shop trying to convert their Rupees to any thing they sell there.

ha ha :D trolling... not interested in trolling buddy they are many others for that

JPMorgan downgrades Indian shares to 'neutral', upgrades China

Reuters | Aug 20, 2013, 09.54AM IST
MUMBAI: JPMorgan has downgraded Indian shares to "neutral" from "overweight", citing strain in balance of payments, while upgrading China shares to "neutral" from "underweight".

The brokerage adds it is late in downgrading India, but if the rupee continues to slide it would continue to underperform.

Citi also lowered its target for India's benchmark index to 18,900 from 20,800, citing increasing uncertainty after the rupee's slide despite Reserve Bank of India's measures since mid-July.
