Pakistan navy is growing and every few years you hear about some struggle with Pakistan navy looking for land. Also whenever a typhoon strikes it's Pakistan navy helicopters that are first to respond.

I think a helicopter carrier would allow Pakistan navy to be able to better patrol and have a base without having to take up so much land. The carriers can be docked at existing infrastructure when needed.

For relief operations, it would have greater mobility and greater area that it can cover. I know the defence of the carrier is an issue for which there are commonly known solutions but what I want to point out is that Pakistan navy will grow it has to and I think time has come for a helicopter carrier.

Pakistan has a lot of relevant experience in shipbuilding and with a little help and equipment from here and there I'm sure it could build something, or buy it.

What do you think? Cost is always an issue but so are many other projects

Hi
If you mean an Amphibious Assault Ship by the term helicopter carrier then your all weather friend China has lots of prospects about it. But if you mean something like Minstral or Juan Carlos then wait for another decade.
But if you really want them for SAR and for humitarian works then I would suggest Pakistan to go for OPVs, yes they are lightly armed and can carry helicopters with large endurance.
To support my argument I would like to present the case of Indian Navy's OPVs, they are cheap and easy to maintain. But they worked side by side in Yemen with frigates and destroyers. Even in Maldives when they had a water problem an Indian Navy OPV was sent there as it had onboard capability to produce tons of drinking water. And add to that presently Indian Navy lacks some minesweepers , so our navy made a juggad and added minesweeping suites to some opvs. And at the time of war they can easily be used with some missiles. Add to it, it can be manufactured by Pakistan itself without any foreign assistance except for it's armaments , radar and propulsion systems.
Just my take.
Cheers
Thanks

And do what with it. Use it in Fata

you want to buy LHD just for SAR missions???? PN should be very rich for that...

the problem is fund... buying a carrier with helis and maintaining them would almost cover entire PN's budget

Don't know what is the purpose of this thread..If PN has overseas ambitions and has plan to raise amphibious assault at distant shores,Helo Carrier may be needed. But I doubt PN would be able to buy it as they're struggling to buy what is essential,Frigates,Destroyers and Submarines along with support ships.Carrier comes later and only very powerful navies possess it.

For operation within Pakistan,it needs new bases, not a LHD.and I doubt Pakistan will buy some for just relief work,as these are pretty costly.A capable LHD's cost equals cost of some 9/10 F-22Ps.

I agree with @Ankit Kumar 001 ...as he said about opv's ...yes opv's are reliable than any carrier. ..a large bodied ship/vessels need heavy maintaining..maintaining such ships is not an easy task..best option is opv.
This is my oppinion. .
Thank you. .

a) What operational purpose would this actually serve to the PN?
b) The vast majority of the PN would have to be assigned just to escort such a vessel
c) How is the cash-starved PN going to pay for this?

Yes it needs a battle group to to protect it from enemy eye..

Thanks for replying guys. The thought just came to my head I thought I'd put it on here see what others say.

If Pakistan Navy had money perhaps it would have been a nice evolution for the navy. But you guys have made some good points about alternatives.

We shouldn't be worrying about these right now. The armed forces focus should be getting rid of terrorism in the nation. The navy isn't playing much of a role right now. Once terrorism is expelled then you can expect more rapid development for PN.
