The CZ 806 has that many improvements over the CZ 805, that it is essentially a new design

CZ 806 BREN 2 A1
Country of origin Czech Republic
Entered service Expected in 2016-2017
Caliber 5.56 x 45 mm NATO
Weight (empty) ~ 3 kg
Length 875 ~ 930 mm
Barrel length 356 mm
Muzzle velocity ?
Cyclic rate of fire ~ 750 rpm
Practical rate of fire 850 rpm
Magazine capacity 30 rounds
Sighting range ~ 500 m
Range of effective fire ~ 500 m

The CZ 806 BREN 2 assault rifle was developed by Ceska Zbrojovka. It is an improved and lighter variant of the CZ 805 BREN. However improvements were so numerous, that the CZ 806 can be seen as an entirely new design. Its appearance resembles that of a Brazilian Taurus ART556 assault rifle. The CZ 806 was introduced in 2015. In 2016 the Czech MoD ordered the first batch of CZ 806 rifles.

The previous CZ 805 was ordered by the Czech MoD back in 2009 for partial rearmament of the Czech Army. Soon after its introduction teething problems of the CZ 805 design emerged. Furthermore in 2011 it saw action during the War in Afghanistan. This weapon was criticized by the soldiers as being to heavy, having poor ergonomics and bad balance (which reduces its firing accuracy). So a number of improvements were made to address all of these issues.

The CZ 806 is a gas-operated, selective fire weapon. Upper receiver is made of aluminum, while lower receiver it made of polymer materials. The weapon is around 0.5 kg lighter than its predecessor and has improved ergonomics. Cocking mechanism was redesigned, so that the cocking handle no longer reciprocates while firing and stops in the rear position when ammunition is expended. Furthermore charging handle is ambidextrous and can be installed on either side. Barrel of this weapon is quick-detachable and is available in three different lengths.

It has been reported, that the CZ 806 was developed from the start as a multi-caliber weapon. It could be also adapted for the Russian 7.62x39 mm and 5.45x39 mm ammunition.

A fire mode selector is fully ambidextrous, as well as other controls of this weapon. It has a simplified trigger system with three positions for "safe", "semi-auto" and "full-auto". A "2-round burst" firing mode of the CZ 805 was abandoned.

The CZ 806 is fed from 30-round magazines. These are STANAG compatible M16-type magazines. So this weapon can accept standard magazines from most other NATO 5.56 mm assault rifles. Magazine release lever is ambidextrous.

This assault rifle has got a new side-folding polymer buttstock, which is adjustable for length. Pistol grip can be equipped with different backstraps in order to suit the shooter.

This weapon has got flip-up iron sights, installed on a full-length Picatinny-type scope rail. The CZ 806 can mount various scopes, red dot and night vision sights.

There are Picatinny-type accessory rails on all sides of the foregrip. So this weapon can mount various accessories, including sound suppressor, or a CZ 805 G1 underbarrel grenade launcher. This 40 mm grenade launcher can be also used as a standalone weapon.

Shape of the CZ 806 flash hider allows the soldier to pass through barbed wire by putting a flash hider onto the barbed wire and shooting it through.

Variants

CZ 806 BREN 2 A1 is a baseline assault rifle with a 356 mm (14") barrel. Actually in terms of dimensions this weapon is closer to carbine, rather than a true full-size assault rifle.

CZ 806 BREN 2 A2 is a carbine with a shorter 280 mm (11") barrel.

Compact assault rifle with a 207 mm (8.1") barrel.
