Congrats to the Government. Last time a less severe cyclone has killed thousands of people.

Congrats to the Government. Last time a less severe cyclone has killed thousands of people.

No last time it was super cyclone with gusts of 260km/hr and stayed there for almost 2 days. This is big but not close to 1999 super cyclone.

Great news that lose of life has been minimal .. essentially nil.

Hope the follow up restoration will be done equally well, so that people can return to their normal lives soon.

Odisha starts restoration, rehabilitation works

With cyclone Phailin weakening, Odisha government today began relief and restoration work in 12 districts, where many as 80.53 lakh people have been hit.

"Rehabilitation will be a big challenge," Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said.

"Top priority was to save lives and we have been successful in it," he told newsmen.

Ganjam, where the cyclone hit the land, was the worst hit district followed by Puri.

Other coastal districts Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Gajapati, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Keonjhar, Kandhmal and Nayagarh, were, however, less harmed, Odisha Revenue and Disaster Minister S N Patro said.

"We have already started relief and restoration work. Our people are already in the fields ... The state government's priority is now restoration and rehabilitation of the affected people," he said.

The government has asked the concerned district collectors to suggest to the people to return to their houses if the weather is conducive, he said.

As many as 8,73,646 people were evacuated to safe places before landfall by Phailin last night.

Though many people in less affected districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara have started returning to their houses, majority of them have lost their shelter.

Houses of about 2.34 lakh people have been damaged in Ganjam district, Patro said, adding the people whose houses were damaged will be provided with polythene for temporary arrangement.

Though the human casualty is seven so far, a large population has been hit by the calamity with their houses and crops damaged and cattle and domestic animals affected.

Cyclone Phailin: Cargo ship missing in West Bengal, rescue operations launched to locate crew

Kolkata: MV Bingo, a China-bound merchant vessel with 20 crewmembers, has lost contact with the ground staff following the cyclonic storm Phailin which swept coastal Odisha on Saturday night, the Coast Guard said on Sunday.

The Panama registered sea vessel left for China from the Sagar anchorage in West Bengal on October 11. According to a Coast Guard official, the ship was last located 25 nautical miles south-southwest of Sagar, about 100 km from Kolkata. It was carrying 8,000 tonnes of iron ore.

"Search and rescue mission is on to track MV Bingo. The rough weather has been hampering the mission but we hope to locate the vessel soon," the official said.

The Kolkata Port Trust officials say while they fear that the ship has sunk, its crew may have survived using life boats.

A Dornier aircraft and a hovercraft have been pressed into service to locate the vessel.

Cyclonic storm Phailin on Saturday night slammed India's east coast near Gopalpur in Odisha, triggering heavy rains and strong winds with speed reaching up to 200 km an hour.

Around 900,000 people were shifted to safety in coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
