ISLAMABAD: Senior US diplomat Alice Wells on Tuesday renewed criticism of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), impliedly urging Islamabad to rethink its involvement with it.

Amb Wells’ speech at a think tank event, which was attended by members of academia and representatives of civil society, criticised the flagship project of China’s One Belt One Road Initiative.

She alleged that there was no transparency in CPEC projects, claiming Pakistan’s debt burden was growing due to the Chinese financing.

While her arguments looked like a repeat of the remarks she had earlier delivered at the Wilson Centre in Washington on Nov 21, 2019, the claims were renewed during her Islamabad trip a few days after Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi sought closer engagement and a robust trade and investment relationship between Pakistan and the US.

FM Qureshi had also sought help from the US to get the country off the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list.

While reiterating the allegations against CPEC, Amb Wells said companies blacklisted by the World Bank had got contracts in the CPEC.

The US diplomat also questioned the immunity from prosecution for the newly formed CPEC Authority that served as the focal body working to identify new areas of cooperation and projects, besides facilitation, coordination and monitoring of ongoing projects.

About the debt problem, Amb Wells insisted that Chinese money was not assistance. By getting Chinese financing for the projects, Pakistan was buying expensive loans and as a buyer it needed to be aware of what it was doing as this would take a heavy toll on its already struggling economy, she contended.

The diplomat also touched on the cost escalation in railways ML-1 upgrade project. The link connects Karachi with Peshawar. She urged the government to be transparent about the mega project.

A Foreign Office statement, meanwhile, said US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Alice Wells met Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood.

The agenda of the meeting largely comprised bilateral issues including the prospects of intensifying political engagement and expanding economic partnership. “It was emphasised that a strong trade and investment relationship was key to advancing the shared vision of the leadership of both countries for a long term, broad-based and enduring partnership,” the statement said.

While talking about human rights abuses by Indian troops in the occupied Kashmir and Delhi’s aggressive actions against Pakistan, including intensified LoC ceasefire violations, Mr Mahmood emphasised the need for international community to play its role for ending the rights violations and peaceful resolution of the dispute.

About peace and stability in Afghanistan, the foreign secretary reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to continue to support the peace process and pursue positive development in Pak-Afghan relations. Pakistan also remained committed to supporting the efforts for de-escalation of tensions and promoting the prospects of a diplomatic way forward on the differences and disputes in the Middle East, he said.

In a meeting with Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Nadeem Babar at the energy ministry office, Amb Wells said the US was ready to enhance cooperation with Pakistan in the energy sector especially in the renewable energy. Mr Babar proposed cooperation in tapping Pakistan’s Shale reserves, specialised training, investments in LNG infrastructure development, renewable energy and other avenues.

The American deep state looks extremely pathetic and desperate with such shameless pleas. This is now a second attempt by the same highly placed official. The fact that deep state elements have to beg in the open is testimony that privately they cannot persuade neither hold any such talks. It is a desperate attempt to persuade Pak to abandon CPEC. Obviously this is just never going to happen.

I can safely claim that Pak and China have deeply frustrated US deep state and by extension her ally India by implementing CPEC. CPEC is a massive hurdle for US designs.

I mean it makes sense why the US government would be concerned by CPEC and OBOR. China to the US is basically the 1980s Soviet Union back then. Every strategic gain by the Chinese is basically a loss for the Americans. It's what the US did with the Soviets and now the Chinese.

Wow! She is allowed to do that while being in Pakistan? What the hell are we thinking. In a nation of opportunist like Dawn, fools and Khota khors, why are we allowing spreading of propaganda that could lead to anarchy specially when on the other hand things like wheat and sugar are contained by the mafia to create shortage and panic, why does PTI government needs more problems at its hands. Alice wells should not be welcomed in Pakistan anymore.

It is very important to know what goes on in the mind of the opposition. This lady is conveying the message on behalf of US deep state. This is not an individual opinion. She is a highly placed official representing her nation and the deep state.

We can safely assume that CPEC, which is the flagship project of OBOR, has US deep state in a fix. This second attempt to criticise it in the middle of Pakistan reveals exactly how desperate the deep state is.

She cant be allowed to criticize CPEC while being inside Pakistan. She can criticize all she wants anywhere else but in Pakistan there has to be some diplomatic norms to be followed. She is basically spreading propaganda for which sadly their are many takers in Pakistan some due to opportunity like Dawn, others due to sheer ignorance.
As for knowing the opposition, i dont think anyone inside the government or the establishment does not know where all of this is coming from? We know from day 1 US intentions about CPEC, its just that now they are being more vocal about it as CPEC starts to bear fruit. I would had been alright if a statement next day would come from the foreign office saying Ms Alice Wells is misinformed, thus giving a snub there and then but i havent seen it. So if we cant do that than she shouldnt be allowed running her mouth as she pleases. Besides we should now be focusing on the next US government. Trump seems to be history. Either he will get impeached or will lose the next election.

Unfortunately for the US there is a big difference between the drunk Soviets and the Industrious Chinese. The Chinese Juggernaut just cannot be stopped.

The US is like that spoiled brat that throws away its toys, but then gets jealous and violent when another kid picks it up.

Instead of Bi--ing and moaning, the US should put it's money where its mouth is and invest billions, just like China did.

Better still US should start using CPEC to trade with Pakistan, China and regional countries.

it is simple : if USA thinks it is bad then it is good for us :pakistan:

I am with you on this, There should be a ban on this pathetic moron from coming over to pakistan. Every country in the world defends its national interest. Every heard BBC news, you will see that they don't allow any criticism against their national interest. It is just unbelievable that pakistani media and foreign office allows this

CPEC should be increasingly transparent initiative - open to public scutiny for its economic aspects. WE are doing China a massive favor with CPEC but what are the tradeoffs and how Pakistani public can benefit from it?

As for American perspectives about CPEC, WE do not have to listen to everything but WE should welcome constructive criticism.

My gripe is that China continue to benefit from American investments but WE are in a delimma. WE should be smarter now.

The US cannot achieve anything with their criticism inside or outside Pakistan.

If the US thinks it can somehow discourage Pakistan from participating in CPEC they are wrong. Not even FATF blackmail can discourage Pakistan.

I agree with the ban idea for this lady. This is malice intent against the well being of Pakistan.
