LAHORE: At a time when the focus of the federal as well as the provincial governments is to minimise the gap between energy demand and supply before the next general elections, the energy planning expert group of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has forecast electricity shortfall to further increase to 10,844MW by 2020.

“The annual growth rate of electricity demand between 2013 and 2020 would be about 7.8%, which would push the overall power demand to 27,840MW by 2017 and 31,900MW by 2020,” said the energy expert group in a report based on the statistics provided by the Ministry of Water.

They further added that the demand growth would eventually swell the shortfall to 9,208MW and 10,844MW, respectively.

“The peak shortfall the Pakistan power system has faced in 2015 was 7,712MW and the total installed capacity currently stands at 25,552MW. In 2017 and 2020, the total installed capacity is likely to reach 26,531MW and 29,131MW respectively,” said the report.

It further added that though the current government was organising ground-breaking ceremonies to kick-off work on different hydel, coal, solar and LNG-based power plants; their capability to generate electricity would not be more than 52%.

“The maximum capability of power plants in Pakistan in not more than 52%,” noted a former official of the Pakistan Electric Power Company while talking with The Express Tribune.

“For instance, if the government manages to complete major power projects by the year 2020, thereby adding 10,000MW, they would actually produce a maximum of 5200MW of electricity owing to technical reasons,” he added.

He further said that the actual shortfall was much more than what the Ministry of Water and Power declared, and the growth rate of demand was between 10-12%.

“Each year, almost 0.7 to 0.8 million new electricity consumers are added to the system along with almost 0.5 million air conditioners that add 1000MW to the system.”

The experts said Pakistan had to invest heavily on its transmission system as the current system is in a dilapidated condition

Even if the current government manages to add the required amount of electricity to the national grid, it will be nearly impossible for them to transmit it.:undecided:

The whole sector needs to be overhauled. We have so much potential to grow and yet are held back by energy deficits. The government thus far has failed to deliver on its promise of improving the energy sector although it still has two years left to show some progress at least.

Which will never be done... They will start 3-4 projects just like Nandi Pur to fulfill their hawas.

when just few MW were added in Musharaf Era and 0 MW By PPP what would you expect... Pakistan need a lot of Power Plants and Dams and mainly above this to improve the Transmission line (line Losses) and control Electricity Theft....

No problem an expensive metro bus should do the trick :D

and then PMLN explanation, In our tenure industries are increase and so do middle class citizen and thats has direct impact on electricity demand but we did have Nandipur, Quaid e Azam solar park and half completed Neelam Jehlum..

Need to complete IP and TAP Gas pipeline asap and on the other end they have to ask foreigner investors in hydel projects and KP as they claim, are building 350 small dams.. Fedral Govt should help them out ... This issue needs attention more.

Purchase electricity and gas from India and in return allow India transit to Afghanistan. Win win situation for both nations.

Only in Pakistan it is thought that complex issues like load shedding can be resolved in a matter of few months or years.

In reality, the distribution system cannot take more load than it is already handling. So even if all these projects go online, the system will crash and load shedding will continue.

We need a 30-40 years plan for electricity to get rid of this problem. Any politician (Ganja or Idiot Khan) who blabbers that electricity problem can be resolved quickly due to his "VISION" or "SINCERITY" needs to be smacked in his pathetic face.

Electricity was ignored since the 1990s. The problem got aggravated in 20 years. A problem that took 20 years to get to this stage will take at least double time to go away.
