China’s state news agency, Xinhua, has reported that the autonomous Xinjiang region in the country’s northwest, will invest $12.3bn in road construction in 2023.

The money will be split between 66 projects, 22 of which are due to be completed this year.

In 2022, Xinjiang spent $11bn on road construction, with 11,000km of roads currently connecting 90% of the region’s locales.

In June 2022, a highway crossing the Taklimakan Desert opened, linking Yuli County and Qiemo County.
