China to Reorganize Over Half of Ground Forces to Form Smaller Divisions. Photo Credit: Sputnik News

China has considered reorganizing over half of its army’s 1.55 million ground troops in a bid to make the forces more rapid.

Some of the existing 18 Army Corps, each of which consists of 30,000-100,000 troops, will be turned into 25 to 30 smaller divisions, the South China Morning Post reported.

"This is a main trend in modern warfare. Even the Russian army has tried to learn from the US army by reducing the size of their troops, making land forces become more nimble and quick-response," a retired senior colonel said.

The Soviet model of organizing army corps currently intact with the People’s Liberation Army does not suit to the demands of modern warfare, the retired colonel added.

The reports have been released amid a President Xi Jinping’s campaign to modernize the Chinese army launched by earlier this year.

A 2015 Chinese defense white paper has stressed the need to build smaller, multifunctional and modular units within the army to make it more nimble.

Smaller self sufficient divisions, capable to fight independently or capable to undertake blitzkrieg kind of operations are backbone of new emerging or evolving warfare. This is the attempt of modern armies to restrict the conflict in limited zones of battles. Or they don't want to punch hard enough to escalate the conflict above N threshold.

But I think it is just the beginning of evolution of this new
Warfare. Its beginning not the end. Reducing the size of the troops, and strength of fighting units cannot guarantee that war will remain limited in certain zone.

If you want to save the world from another catastrophe, invest in education, invest in peace and peace building institutions. Educate the world about coexistence not about competitions.

Not all countries is capable of that. For example, you want to be numbe and rapid deployment. You need Y-20 or C-17 type of transport in number to achieve the operational requirement of being nimble, fast reaction and able to call upon rapidly.

I think this re structure is done concurrently with induction of Y-20. Y-20 can allow rapid deployment of armour mechanized and troops in large number.

This is nothing new. Not sure why it would be called the beginning of the evolution of new warfare. Just China changing the way it fights.
