Who's most ready for 5G? China, not the US, leads all

For all the talk from the US carriers, China holds a narrow lead as the country most suited to jump to 5G, according to a new study.

In the race to get to 5G wireless technology in a real way, China is poised to lead the world.

That's according to a study conducted by Analysys Mason, which found that China had the best combination of wireless carriers committing to the technology, government backing for research, a clear rollout plan by 2020 and government commitment of spectrum, or the radio airwaves critical to deliver wireless service.

After China, South Korea, then the US and Japan make up global leaders in 5G, according to the firm.

The study marks the latest trickle of hype over 5G -- the next generation of cellular technology, which is supposed to be significantly faster and more responsive and to power other areas of tech like self-driving cars or streaming virtual reality services. At least, when it actually gets here.

The reality has been lots of promises over the past few years, with various companies and governments quietly trying to put the pieces together to make 5G work.

The study, commissioned by US cellular industry trade group CTIA, likely is meant as a kick in the pants to the US government (the CTIA represents carriers like Verizon and AT&T) to both free up regulations and access to spectrum for 5G deployment.

It could work, given the White House's views on 5G. After all, this administration reportedly floated the idea of building a nationalized 5G network, and President Donald Trump killed Broadcom's acquisition of Qualcomm because of the threat of losing the US leadership position in 5G.

US carriers are looking to get an early start. Verizon and AT&T hope to launch 5G services this year, and T-Mobile and Sprint are both deploying this year for a broader launch in 2019. But it's unclear how broad those services will be at launch, or if the early experience will meet the hype.

While there's jockeying between the four big national carriers, there's also a competition around the world between countries. The loss of leadership in 5G could affect the economy, according to a separate study by Recon Analytics that was also commissioned by the CTIA.

"When countries lose global leadership in a generation of wireless, jobs are shed and technology innovation gets exported overseas," said Roger Entner, an analyst at Recon Analytics.
 
USA is receding into a regressive country. With closing borders and soon their educational institutions will become less attractive for the foreign students as well.
It is not necessary for the US to lead in every front, bro. China is likely to showcase greater progress in certain matters than any country due to the sheer scale of its development programs.

US has closed its borders to illegal immigrants only (nothing wrong with this). I know some people who have shifted to the US recently and they are doing just fine.

American educational institutes will not loose their appeal anytime soon; US has much greater appeal than China in this matter so far.

Actually, US were never a leader of Cellular communication beside inventing the first mobile phone. Then basically, it all went wrong from there.

US was in the 1980s to most part of 1990 in use of a CDMA system, of which is inferior than the same GSM system (or 1G) that was launched by Nordic Mobile Telephone group. CDMA system was eventually dropped and US started to adopt the GSM network in the 1G format.

2G was launched in Finland in 1991, which feature the first dual brand digital GSM with GPRS technology. The world has adopted 2G technology in 1993.

3G was launched by International Telecommunication Union 9ITU), based in France. Which feature mobile data access and today wireless framework (Which is an Australian Technology), first 3G launch is at 2001 by Japanese NTT DoCoMo

4G or 4G/LTE was first launched in Oslo, Norway and Stockholm in 2009, Sweden and it was a fully funded project, again, by ITU. Noted that the Oslo system is a JV between Telenor of Norway and Huawei of China, while the Swedish system was jointly developed by Ericsson and Nokia.

5G is jointly developed by consortium of mobile technology company world wide, basically it fractioned into a few lead.

AT&T teaming up with Intel and Qualcomm
Nokia teaming up with Ericsson, Immasat and Telefonica.
Samsung going in by itself

World first limited commercial trial launch of 5G technology is by South Korea during the 2018 Winter Olympic.

So, US were never in the game to begin with.......And to be fair, I am pretty sure South Korea has already won the 5G game and they have a clear schedule for nation wide 5G roll out, and it is slate at 2019 and they will be using Intel System couple with Samsung Infrastructure. According to KT

It is reported the speed is 10Gbps shared with 44,000 user average. Which is about 100 times faster than current 4G technology. Jesus, and the South Korean wanted it to be even faster....

Also noted that in that trial, KT feature equipment from Intel, Samsung, Ericsson and they intentionally left out Huawei.....

now there is zero synergy between academic research and industrial cooperation, if this trend continues then US will fall back even more in emerging tech.

I think US company don't pay enough money for the tech they themselves developed is one of the issue. They aren't, for some reason, not willing to put money into the adaptation of the technology.

In 5G field, Intel already have a lead on System development (KT was using Intel tablet for the 5G trial in winter Olympic) but instead working for local telco like AT&T or Verizon, Intel would rather partner up with Samsung and KT.

That is something need to be change before the US can enter the next level.

I was talking about university level research, the supremacy of US academic research is fading because of lack of funding.

Actually, quite a few key research on 5G are from American University/Universities.....

Millimeter Wave Wireless Communications is of Research form NYU and UAustin.
MIMO is from Bell Research Lab (Well, they are now own by Nokia, but used to belong to AT&T)

The other 2 key Techs belong to South Korea and the UK.

Majority of americans are dumb nowadays, it's obvious that they can't compete anymore with the Chinese when it comes to technological achievements.

Majority of people are dumb everywhere: including China. It takes geniuses to make leaps in progress. The country which enables these geniuses is the one which remains at forefront of human progress. US has been this country till now and possibly in foreseeable future. China still needs to setup its universities and industries such that geniuses from whole world can come and contribute to the progress there. Mainland China as a country and society is still very hostile for foreigners as compared to say USA or Europe.

It is good to see that Northeast Asia hold three-quarters of global 5G competitiveness. This means, in terms of regional supply and services chain, China is very well situated to lead.

The US is now very proud of their big, smart and beautiful missiles that kill children. This is one area they definitely lead the world, along with their small and meek allies like UK and France.

For Huawei, 2019 model (Huawei P20 and Mate (XX?)) will be 5G enabled. I believe Xiaomi will also follow the suit.
 
Over 100 5G base stations to be built in Shanghai this year

China Mobile says it plans to build more than 100 5G base stations in Shanghai by the end of 2018, as a step toward its goal of achieving large-scale commercial 5G deployment by 2020, The Paper.cn reported.

The company has already built two 5G base stations in Shanghai alongside opening a 5G lab to explore possible commercial applications with its partners, said Yan Jun, general manager of the planning and development department of China Mobile Shanghai branch.

Yan said the newest 5G network applications will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress to be held in Shanghai this June.

He said China Mobile’s partners are currently dedicating more time and effort into applying 5G to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), and have so far seen progress in experiments of real-time image transmission. In the future, they will test the 5G network on UVA security defense and logistics.

Yan said the existing base stations can support broadband operations such as rapid transmissions of virtual reality, augmented reality and 3D holographic images.

He said 5G is currently only on display and it will take some time before it reaches consumers.
