JIUQUAN, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday launched the Shenzhou-17 manned spaceship, and the three astronauts aboard will be sent to stay in orbit for about six months on a space station mission.

The spaceship, atop a Long March-2F carrier rocket, blasted off at 11:14 a.m. Thursday (Beijing Time) from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

About 10 minutes after the launch, the Shenzhou-17 spaceship separated from the rocket and entered its designated orbit. The crew members, consisting of Tang Hongbo, Tang Shengjie and Jiang Xinlin, are in good shape and the launch is a complete success, the CMSA said.

After entering orbit, the Shenzhou-17 spaceship will make a fast, automated rendezvous and docking with the space station combination. The Shenzhou-17 crew will rotate with the Shenzhou-16 crew in orbit.

The Shenzhou-17 crew has the youngest lineup since the construction of China's Tiangong space station started.

Tang Hongbo, born in 1975, is the mission commander and a veteran astronaut once launched into orbit on the Shenzhen-12 mission in June 2021. Tang Shengjie, born in 1989, is a new face and also the youngest astronaut to enter China's space station. Jiang Xinlin, born in 1988, is also a newcomer to space.

They will perform various in-orbit space science and application payload tests and experiments, Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the CMSA, announced at a press conference on Wednesday.

They will carry out extravehicular activities, install extravehicular payloads and conduct space station maintenance and other tasks, Lin said.

The Shenzhou-17 astronauts will do extravehicular experimental maintenance for the first time, which is a very challenging task, Lin added.

With space debris increasing, their impact on long-term operating spacecraft is inevitable, Lin said. "Through preliminary inspections, we have found that the solar wings of the space station had been hit by tiny space particles several times, causing minor damages."

"Of course, we already took this into consideration in the design stage. At present, all functionality and performance indicators of the space station meet requirements," he added.

The astronauts will also continue to assess the functioning and performance of the space station and test the coordination and compatibility of ground support centers in performing space station operation and management tasks, to further enhance the operating efficiency and fault correction capability of the space station, he said.

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's Shenzhou-17 manned spaceship successfully docked with the space station combination on Thursday, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

The spaceship made a fast, automated rendezvous and docking with the front port of the space station's core module Tianhe at 5:46 p.m. Thursday (Beijing Time),

The whole process took approximately 6.5 hours, said the CMSA.

The astronaut trio aboard the spaceship will then enter the Tianhe module and the three astronauts of the Shenzhou-16 mission have got ready for their arrival, it said.

The spaceship, atop a Long March-2F carrier rocket, blasted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 11:14 a.m. Thursday (Beijing Time).

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The three astronauts aboard China's Shenzhou-17 spaceship have entered the country's space station and met with another astronaut trio on Thursday, starting a new round of in-orbit crew handover.

The Shenzhou-16 crew opened the hatch at 7:34 p.m. (Beijing Time). The three space station occupants greeted the new arrivals, and they took group pictures.

Tang Hongbo, commander of the Shenzhou-17 mission, experienced the historic moment as one of the first Chinese astronauts to China's space station in June 2021 when launched into orbit on the Shenzhou-12 mission.

Now, the space complex Tang revisits has been extended into a versatile space lab with two additional modules and more sophisticated experimental facilities. He also set a new record for the shortest interval between two spaceflight missions by Chinese astronauts.

The space get-together of the two crews kicked off the third in-orbit crew rotation in China's space station.

According to the China Manned Space Agency, the six astronauts will live and work together for about four days to complete planned tasks and handover work.

JIUQUAN, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Shenzhou-16 taikonauts handed over control of the Tiangong space station to the newly arrived Shenzhou-17 crew on Sunday, said the China Manned Space Agency.

The two crews held a handover ceremony after the Shenzhou-16 taikonauts had completed all set tasks. They are due to return to Earth on Oct. 31 aboard the Shenzhou-16 spaceship.

The Dongfeng Landing Site, located in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is preparing for the return of Shenzhou-16 from space.

This will be the fifth mission the landing site has conducted to recover a manned spacecraft and the crew.

Ground personnel have undergone various search and rescue exercises for the upcoming mission, the landing site said.

JIUQUAN, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Shenzhou-16 astronauts are in good health condition and the Shenzhou-16 manned mission is a success, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

Shenzhou-16's return capsule, carrying astronauts Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao, touched down at the Dongfeng landing site in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region at 8:11 a.m. (Beijing Time) on Tuesday, the agency said.

The return capsule separated from Shenzhou-16's orbiting capsule at 7:21 a.m. Then the brake engine ignited, and the return capsule separated from the propulsion capsule, it said.

Soon after the return capsule landed, the ground search team arrived at the landing site. Medical personnel confirmed that the astronauts were in good health.

China launched the manned spaceship Shenzhou-16 on May 30, 2023. It was the first crewed mission for the application and development stage of China's space station.

Its crew, staying in orbit for 154 days, has carried out a total of 70 space experiments, performed a space walk, delivered a lecture from the space station, and assisted with the cargo getting out of the space station for several times.
