According to a 2019 report in The Guardian, the population of donkeys declined by 76% in the People’s Republic of China since 1992, pushing the country to rely on imports from developing countries.

Before Beijing turned to Islamabad for help, it was importing the donkey skins from Niger and Burkina Faso, until the two West African countries banned their export.

Not a first for Pakistan​

This is not the first time Pakistan has decided to expand the global donkey skin trade, to aid its friend for donkey’s years. In 2017, according to a report in The Express Tribune, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government had also announced a $1 billion-worth project — ‘Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa-China Sustainable Donkey Development Programme’ — aimed at increasing the donkey population in the province. In the guise of the ‘development’ project, Pakistan hoped to gain additional investment in the agriculture sector under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

It was also reported that a donkey hospital in Lahore and two farms were set up in Mansehra and Dera Ismail Khan in Pakistan.

Pakistani mangoes land in China via newly opened air cargo route​

NANNING – The second batch of Pakistani mangoes arrived in Nanning, capital of China’s southwest autonomous region of Guangxi, on the afternoon of June 8, Adnan Hafeez, Director of Imperial Ventures (Pvt) Ltd, told China Economic Net (CEN) in an interview.

The shipment comprising one tonne of Sindhri variety was transported by YTO Express via a newly opened cargo flight between Lahore and Nanning, the businessman told CEN reporter. “We have been working with this airline for the past four years, so we feel comfortable continuing to work with them as the level of cooperation and understanding is high.”

Known for its large size, yellow colour and ample sweetness, the Pakistani king of fruits will be shared with major Chinese B2B clients and outlets for sampling after custom clearance and necessary certifications by the relevant Chinese authorities, he noted.

Having brought Pakistani mangoes to the Chinese market over the past few years, Adnan’s team has been working to enhance mango quality as well as packaging and storage techniques, he shared with CEN. “Recently, we have conducted mango bagging activity in collaboration with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) to improve quality at source.”

He added, more focus will be devoted to saving costs as air cargo is still costly. “We are trying to send the unripe and the bulk packing mangoes to save some cost.”

The first shipment of Pakistani mangoes reached Nanning on May 31, distributed directly to a major Chinese fruit outlet, Adnan revealed.

Another batch of Sindri mangoes weighing 3.5 tonnes will land in Nanning on June 10, which will be sold both online and offline, a Guangzhou-based enterprise told CEN in an interview.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistani mangos will make their debut in China’s Xinjiang this year as a Pakistani logistics enterprise is prepared to transport the Pakistani king of fruits to Xinjiang via the land route, as per a previous CEN report.

China is eager to import meat, potatoes, onions, mangoes and cherries from Pakistan and in this regard, Chinese experts will visit quarantine facilities of the country in February this year, said Chinese Ambassador Yao Jing.

In a meeting with Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar, he said that China wanted to build stronger socio-economic ties with Pakistan and enhance its imports from Islamabad as well.

“China has a great demand for meat and poultry products and it can be a lucrative international market for Pakistan,” he stressed. “Both countries must work together for the removal of technical barriers like sanitary and phyto-sanitary (SPS) and quarantine requirements.”

The Chinese ambassador expressed confidence in Bakhtiar as former minister for planning and development because of his contribution to the expansion of phase-II of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Pakistan's beef export to China helps overcome balance of payments crisis: Pakistani Commercial Counsellor​

confirmed that the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) has granted Pakistani beef the access to the Chinese market. This news holds significant implications for both countries, as China is one of the world's largest meat importers, and Pakistan is a prominent beef exporter.

The Pakistani ambassador to China Moin ul Haque expressed his elation via Twitter, stating, “Chinese Customs has issued a notification to allow the export of Pakistan's boiled beef to China. This development marks a significant milestone in China-Pakistan bilateral trade. It presents Pakistani exporters with a big opportunity to tap into the $15 billion Chinese market.”

Qadir told Gwadar Pro that Pakistan, already a significant beef exporter, will see its economy boosted by this new market. For China, the move will help meet the country's growing demand for meat and provide greater variety for its consumers.

"This is major news for Pakistan as it opens up a $15 billion market and provides a great opportunity to enhance its exports. It will also have positive macro-economic implications for Pakistan’s balance of payments,” added Qadir.

Qadir informed Gwadar Pro that the GACC and the Pakistan Ministry of Food and Security will oversee the entire process of heat-treated beef being exported to China, from packaging and storage to transportation.

Owais Mir, CEO & founder of DAE Group, told Gwadar Pro that the decision by GACC to allow Pakistani beef imports is a significant development for both countries. The evolution of the market in the coming years remains to be seen.

“It is expected that heat-treated beef from 1.5 million cattle can be exported to China this year. Further capacity enhancement would necessitate the plantation and upgrade of livestock, along with new farms," he mentioned.

Pakistan opens doors to Chinese meat enterprises​

BEIJING- "There's a lot of potential for enhancing meat exports to China," said Ghulam Qadir, Commercial Counsellor, Pakistani Embassy in Beijing, while addressing a forum titled "2023 Meat Import Development & Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Port Cold Chain Economy New Growth Forum" on June 30.

He invited Chinese enterprises to participate in Pakistan's Agri Expo (starting from August 10) in which over 300 top Pakistani agriculture and food processing firms are expected, including meat, fisheries, oil seeds, fruits, and vegetables, food processing ones.

Ghulam Qadir stated that the Agri Expo undoubtedly will open doors to meat enterprises, unveiling the untapped potential that the country possesses. As businesses leverage the opportunities presented by the Expo, the future of Pakistan's meat sector looks bright, promising sustainable economic development and increased global recognition.

In a landmark decision, the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) has already granted access to Pakistani boiled beef to the Chinese market, he said.

"Donkey meat is another important potential and the protocol on Donkey skin has almost been finalized by Pakistan. This is another opportunity arising. Similarly, donkey meat will be allowed to China in the next two to three months approximately," Qadir added.

He further said that the favorable climatic conditions, an abundance of grazing lands, and ample water resources contribute to the availability of high-quality feed for livestock. With a rising demand for meat, both domestically and globally, Pakistan possesses a vast potential to cater to China’s growing market.

Pakistan Set to Export Cherries to China for First Time in Over a Decade​

The General Administration of Customs China (GACC) confirmed to the Department of Plant Protection (DPP), Ministry of National Food Security and Research, that Pakistani exporters can export cherries from Pakistan to China from DPP-registered orchards and pack houses.

This market access request was pending since 2012. However, GACC after a video inspection of quarantine procedures and registered orchards & cold treatment facilities, and packhouses registered with DPP for sanitary and phytosanitary measures, allowed the export of cherries from Pakistan to China in accordance with the agreed protocol.

The Department of Plant Protection took special steps to upgrade registered orchards, cold treatment facilities, and pack houses as per the requirements of GACC. Tireless efforts including guidance and repeated technical compliance audits were put in this direction by DPP to ensure and enable these orchards and facilities to export cherries through improvement in food safety and phytosanitary measures besides quality, storage, and packaging. Now, 90 cherry orchards and 15 cold treatment facilities & packhouses from Pakistan can export cherries to China.

This agreement opens a gateway to further exports to international markets given the quality standards remain sound. Further, the up-gradation of more orchards and facilities is in the pipeline with DPP, to make them at par with international standards to achieve major shares in high-end markets of Asia, Europe, the US, and Australia and obtain their registration for export to China.
