Although the rail links are still on paper, the motorways are well en route to realization. Have a look at page 12 of this report by NHA on the completed motorway links in Balochistan. It's from 2012.

Current port infrastructure at Gwadar:
  • 3 -multipurpose berths — each 200 meters long.
  • 1 -RO-RO berth
  • 1-100 meter service berth
  • 4.7 km long approach channel dredged to 15.5 m inner harbour and 12.5 m outer harbour
  • Width of channel-206 m
  • Port Basin and Turning Area 595 m diameter
  • Related port infrastructure and port handling equipment & pilot boats, tugs, survey vessels, etc.
  • The port, currently, has the capacity to handle 50,000 DWT bulk carriers.
Current port facilities at Gwadar:
  • Port Area 64,000 sq-m
  • Container stacking area 48,278 sq-m
  • Reefer area(400 points) 367sq-m
  • Empty container stacking area 6,815 sq-m
  • Storage yard 28,669 sq-m
  • Transit shed 3,750 sq-m
  • Hazardous cargo storage yard 1,800 sq-m
Also, contrary to the assertion that there are no roads connecting Gwadar to Pakistan, there is an estimated 4,000+ kms of carpeted road in Balochistan. Atthough the motorway Gwadar-Turbat-Khuzdar-Ratordero is currently under construction, the Makran Coastal Highway connecting Gwadar to Karachi through Ormara and Pasni is complete.

As @oye_natta noted above, significant additional facilities and links would stand completed by 2018. I wish they'd work a little quicker but the ongoing phases are being satisfactorily completed.

Couple of days ago 300MW coal power plant for Gwader was approved by China. New Gwader airport underconstruction will be completly financed by China, should be completed in couple of years.

Six Baloch commanders surrender to authorities
28MAY


QUETTA (Online) – Six militant commanders involved in number of sabotage acts have surrendered to Sibbi Scouts authorities.

Commander Arzi and five others including Ahmed Khan, Bakht Ali, Sharbat Khan, Bani and Bhaggo Khan surrendered with their families to Sibbi Scouts here on Monday.

All of the militants took oath not to indulge in subversive activities and remain loyal to the country.

Speaking on this occasion, Col. Afzal Mehmood and DIG Qamarul Hassan expressed gratitude, and provided financial assistance to the former Baloch commanders and their families.

Who will open a factory in Gwadar which can be bombed and taken over and will need a full scale military operation to clear the factory?

Compare to Chabahar where at max. warnings and red alerts may be sounded at rare occasions.

Gwadar doesnt face any insurgency ....here is a pic from Quetta the capital ... from 11 august:

A port's success depends on its Hinterland and a hinterland's success depends on the level of investment and resultant on the ground real business activity both in secondary and tertiary sectors.

GoP is considering building $1 billion LNG terminal at Gwader. And Chinese investors are ready to build Indistrial park at Gwader.

''Reposing their confidence on the improved security situation in port city of Gwadar, the leading group of Chinese Investors have shown their interest to joint work as Industrial Park, free zone operators and investors in Gwadar.

“It would bring US$ 10 billion, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), annually in Balochistan, once the first phase of 9.2 kms Gwadar Free Zone in made functional, chairman GPA said while, referring the estimates of the investors.''

Gwadar can never be a commercial port for the China because it is too far from Chinese heartland for it to be cost effective.
However, it would serve as an excellent military port for PLAN owing to its location near the Strait of Hormuz.

With US not as dependant on oil from ME as before and ever increasing Chinese oil imports, one would think China would assume more military responsibility in ensuring passage of oil from ME in future.
I expect to see Chinese military footprint increase in Gwadar and perhaps even Chabahar owing to good relations b/w China and Iran

I belive, both civil & military use by chinese is ok for Pakistan. The thought was more business oriented
when this project was initiated, but it isnt any wrong with having some navy presence here.
 
To Indians:
Those of you who say that this port does not fit the Chinese economic're wrong, China is very interested in developing this port.

China for an alternative to transporting goods and cargo, oil and gas via Pakistan, then they need to go the long way around dangerous malaka Strait. Where several anti-Chinese states exist, which can block all transfers to China in wartime.

Pakistan also look for opportunities to develop their land and earn recurring revenue by providing quick way to China. China is as large as about 60 countries in European size. So this mark eden is enough for Pakistan.

Afghanistan has in the past been velkommne in Pakistan, whether they want to use the port of Gawadar for trade, they are welcome. Everyone knows that in wartime it has 6.4 mil Afghans sought refuge in Pakistan.

About Afghanistan now in peacetime do not want to use the port in Pakistan, so they can feel free to use the port in Iran for our part. The Iranians are also our brothers. The countries of Central Asia are welcome to use the facilities in Gawadar, the same applies to Russia. About docks in Iran fits these countries better so they can feel free to use the port in Iran for our part.

NEW DELHI: India is making a concerted push into Central Asia by taking charge of a crucial transportation network through Iran into the region and beyond. After getting an enthusiastic thumbs up from 14 stakeholder countries in the region in January, experts from all the countries will meet in New Delhi on March 29 to put final touches to the project known as the International North-South Corridor.

The project envisages a multi-modal transportation network that connects ports on India's west coast to Bandar Abbas in Iran, then overland to Bandar Anzali port on the Caspian Sea; thence through Rasht and Astara on the Azerbaijan border onwards to Kazakhstan, and further onwards towards Russia. Once complete, this would connect Europe and Asia in a unique way -- experts estimate the distance could be covered in 25-30 days in what currently takes 45-60 days through the Suez Canal.

In the January meeting, Sanjay Singh (secretary east, MEA) and Rahul Khullar (commerce secretary) told Iran that India would take charge of the project, including building the missing sections of the railway and road link in Iran. Thanks to US sanctions on Iran's oil sector, India is finding it difficult to pay for its oil imports with hard currency. One of the best ways of paying for Iranian oil is through infrastructure projects like the corridor, which serves economic and strategic interests of all states concerned.

This has been a win-win proposition for India since the North-South Corridor agreement was signed between India, Iran and Russia in September 2000. But over the years, the project fell into disuse. Iran made little attempt to complete construction on its side, expending little political or administrative energy. Neither did Russia or India, which preferred to talk about it but did little to push it. Meanwhile, 11 other countries, including all the Central Asian states, joined up.

Several recent developments have changed India's timid approach. First, China has been building an extensive road and railway network through Central Asia, aiming to touch Europe. It's fast, efficient and already on the ground. While this has made Central Asia accessible to China and others, it is worrying these countries no end. Over the past few years, Central Asian states have repeatedly approached India to play the balancing role. Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan actually gave an oil block, Satpaev, to India on strategic considerations.

Second, with Pakistan in a state of almost chronic instability, India can never hope to access Central Asia through Pakistan. Its best bet remains Iran. While India will have to reduce oil imports from Iran, building a big-ticket infrastructure corridor is a reaffirmation of its commitment to the relationship.

Meena Singh Roy, senior fellow at IDSA, who is closely connected with the project, said, "The potential of this corridor will be manifold with India, Myanmar and Thailand getting linked by road. This will boost trade between Europe and South East Asia as well."

The North-South Corridor, which can be described as part of the "new great game", is now a battle for "power, hegemony, profits and resources", as a senior official put it. Quite apart from opening up new markets for India, the corridor could also be used to transport energy resources to India -- from oil, gas to uranium and other industrial metals.

In the forthcoming expert-level meetings in Delhi, Indian officials expect to finalize issues of customs and other commercial infrastructure. India has now agreed to provide all this expertise.

Simultaneously, India is eyeing two other transit and transportation networks from Central Asia -- all of them going through Iran. One is a Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan Corridor -- a 677-km railway line connecting these countries with Iran and the Persian Gulf. It will link Uzen in Kazakhstan with Gyzylgaya-Bereket-Etrek in Turkmenistan and end at Gorgan in Iran's Golestan province.

The second comes in from Uzbekistan through northern Afghanistan, known as the Northern Distribution Network through which the US and NATO currently route 70% of their supplies for the ISAF forces. But after the US and NATO exit Afghanistan in 2014, India plans to extend this route to link up with the Zaranj-Delaram road that enters Iran.

India has been pushing Iran to complete construction of the Chahbahar port, which is crucial for these corridors to work to India's advantage. Iran has been notoriously slow in taking these up but India expects that in its current isolation, Iran could do a rethink.

No industry in Pakistan is mad enough to send goods all the way to Gwadar in far end of Balochistan. They will all still prefer Karachi port.

China wants to set up Industrial park in the middle of nowhere? The local population will not have the skill.
China will have to import labour, Import Machinery.

to support an industrial park an ancillary industry will be needed. Hotels will have to be built for business guests.

Chabahar already has these facilities.

Gwadar is just a back-up route for Chinese oil supply.

Chabahar is set to be West Asia's pivotal port of trade.

I do not read urdu/arabic so kindly translate the document you have posted.

I don't think every person residing in Balochistan wants a separate country. Majority of the Baloch people do. ( Hope this is not going off-thread).

Not we but Chinese are building and financing these projects. Do you think China is stupid to invest close to $40 billion in next 4 years? And ask China why they are stupid enough to set up industrial park out of nowhere. Maybe they should instead invest somwhere in India right? Pathetic yindu

Chinese setting up an Industrial park in India won't be welcome as of now.

This thread is about Chabahar vs Gwadar.
Whatever China is investing is only because it wants a secondary route for ME oil rather than Malacca which US Navy would block in case of conflict.

So as a commercial port Chabahar will come out on top any day. It has the required hinterland which Gwadar cannot acquire.
