Canada has selected the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) to satisfy its Future Fighter Capability Project (FFCP) requirement, opting for the ‘fifth-generation' stealth platform over the Saab Gripen E.

The Canadian government announced the decision on 28 March, saying that it was entering into negotiations with the US government and Lockheed Martin for 88 F-35 jets for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).

“This procurement represents the most significant investment in the RCAF in more than 30 years. It is essential for protecting the safety and security of Canadians. It will enhance our Arctic sovereignty. It will ensure we are equipped to better defend North America, and it will help make sure we continue to meet our NATO and NORAD [North American Aerospace Defense Command] obligations well into the future,” Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) said on its website.

Canada had downselected its FFCP requirement to replace its ageing fleet of Boeing F/A-18 (CF-18/CF-188 in national service) Hornets to the F-35 from the United States and the Gripen E from Sweden. It had earlier discounted the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet from the United States, while France and the United Kingdom had withdrawn the Rafale and Eurofighter, respectively, from the bidding over technical concerns with the requirement.

Canada was one of the countries who made investment into this lockheed project. So it is natural that it buys f-35

Canada under Prime Minister Trudeau decided against purchasing any of the aircraft and was to halt any further investment in the program a few years ago.

He opted to buy used Australian F-18's instead, which was ridiculous seeing that Canada was retiring the same plane.

Trudeau has now realized that Biden is not going to act like Canada's big brother anymore without some commitment from Canada.

Can anyone imagine the full power of the F35 fighters ever come to use? As much as the anti westerners liked to bash this plane, none wants to go up against a fleet of such capacity.

You should have been on this forum a few yrs ago. There was no shortage of how the F-35 is a 'failure', etc, etc...Then how the Russians, the Chinese, and even the Iranians are going to surpass US in 'stealth'.

It was a clever narrative constructed by the russians I suppose. It was somehow caught by the mainstream media, and out of nowhere it became the truth known by ordinary people with zero knowlegde of military hardware and all if a sudden being experts on fighter jets and stealth. I had coworkers talking about the F35 not being able to fly back then - people with zero interest in anything military. They just knew the F35 was a waste of money. Period.
