Turkish defense and civil industry firm Otokar has inked an agreement to provide tactical armored vehicles to the security forces amid the government’s problems with BMC, which promised to deliver Kirpi armored carriers but has been unable to deliver orders on time.

Otokar said yesterday that it planned to deliver the order, which is worth 82 million Turkish Liras, in 2013. The agreement encompasses the provision of various types of tactical wheeled armored vehicles.

Turkey’s defense procurement body, the Turkish Defense Industry Undersecretariat, gave BMC a one-month deadline on March 20 to deliver 175 Kirpis and 105 trucks that the company has failed to deliver thus far due to financial problems.

Levent Şenel, the head of the Defense Industry Undersecretariat’s land vehicles department, had said Turkey was not dependent on BMC for developing such vehicles and that the body could easily consider other options, including Otokar, for the construction of the carriers if the problems persisted.

“During the tender process, we chose the Kirpi on the basis of its advantages but Otokar went on to create its own prototype. After testing the first one, it also produced another one in a different size. If we want to buy a ready-made one, there is a proper vehicle available.”

He said in addition to Otokar, FNNS was another company that could also develop this kind of vehicle. The National Defense Ministry had signed a deal in 2009 with BMC to produce 468 Kirpis and trucks in a range of sizes, to be delivered by the end of 2012. BMC is currently 175 armored carriers and 105 2.5-ton-capacity trucks behind the agreed schedule. Along with the military, police forces are also waiting for 468 Kirpi with past-due delivery dates.

The company has been in a tight squeeze since last May, when the company first failed to pay salaries on time, and production at BMC factories have halted several times in the intervening period. As a last resort, unpaid workers have protested against the company by marching to Ankara and Istanbul from İzmir, where BMC production is located.

Told you, In term of MRAPs we have plenty of those. However this seems more like a warning, BMC is propably the only company in Turkey that can deliver Turkish made Trucks according to Requirment.

I know that ,but in 7 Day´s BMC must have a Answer.

I mean those BMC Kirpi´s are good and very important for the Army ,what BMC has done actually is not acceptable.

Next time Turkey enter´s a War (Allah göstermesin) and BMC cannot deliver again Military Vehicles.

Tek PKK var diye alinmiyor BMC´den Askeri Araclar. Yarini Düsünmek lazim !

Without supplies, no army is brave !

Good to see that the SSM's mechanisms works well. Something had to be done either way. Pros and cons I can think of by switching supplier;

+ gives space for new innovations, new ideas and maybe even a chance to reconsider our current need for MRAP-vehicles and the requirements.
- logistics, spare parts, etc.

I don't like this, we are just evading the problem that biggest truck manufacturer of Turkey is going bankrupt. I hope BMC can get their sh.t together ASAP.

BMC is one of the largest if not THE largest industrial/commercial/military vehicle producer of the whole Balkan and Middle East region which happens to be a Turkish owned company. They also export military/commercial/industrial vehicles countless countries, support thausand of jobs in Turkey and you celebrate their downfall... I can't udnerstand people sometimes...

Goverment needs to bailout BMC assap or Cukurova Holding needs to act on patriotical values and sell BMC to a non Koc owned Turkish company. (our military industry is becoming a monopoly under Koc Holding and that is something we should focus on too)

It's governments fault in the first place to make business with that scammer Mehmit Emin Karamehmet.

His group owns Turkcell and Ligtv. How can BMC goes bankrupt ?

Maybe because of the commercial division of BMC is having a hard time selling goods and only having negative output.
It started as a buss company and that part cant make any profit(no sales,or not enough).
Someone should at least buy the military division if not the whole company to save it.
How can it be that most Turkish companies are making profit and one of the biggest is only losing.
The state should buy the company or finance it untill she is out of the red figures.

Man, we are talking about Çukurova Group:laugh:. They recently proposed $1.6 billion to russian altimo firm to buy % 13,8 share of Turkcell. They can easily save the company from going bankrupt.

Turkcell'de 750 milyon dolarl

P.S: Goverment owned companies are simply not efficient(MKEK).

Well, why dont they then can you answer that question?
The government could provide a loan with very low or no interest to secure the jobs of the workers(like they do in most european countries).
MKEK is not worth mentioning,we all know their products.

Because Çukurova Group is owned by a scammer named Mehmet Emin Karamehmet. They simply seek more profit and don't care whom they hurt in the process.

He robbed people with his bank. Citizens couldn't get their money back from the bank. Prosecution took many years. Many people commited suicade because of their debts.

Aydın Doğan, Cem Uzan, Mehmet Emin Karamehmet, their familiy owned huge holdings did signifact damage to Turkish Economy in 90s. When Erdogan come to power in 2002 with a land sliding victory, he had no reason to fear them, so he finished Aydın Doğan and Cem Uzan. Some of the assets Karamehmet's confiscated by the state but he managed to survive.

Control of BMC, one of the largest commercial vehicle manufacturers in Turkey, will be handed over to the country's biggest bank, Is Bankasi, as collateral for debts incurred by the company's owner, a plan that will enable BMC to continue production and make payroll.

BMC is producing Turkey's first mine-resistant vehicle, the Kirpi (hedgehog), for the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) and had already delivered 250 vehicles to the TSK last year when the company was forced to halt Kirpi production due to financial problems.

Now, Mehmet Emin Karamehmet's BMC is expected to be handed over to Is Bankasi as collateral for debts incurred, enabling the company to pay workers' salaries and continue Kirpi production.

The Kirpi can hold a crew of 13 and has proven to be better than competing mine and bullet-proof vehicles due to its integrated seat design that absorbs the pressure generated by a mine blast. Moreover, it is equipped with run-flat tires, which means that in the event of a tire blowout, the vehicle can maintain a particular speed for a certain distance. The same system also adjusts the air pressure in the tires according to surface conditions.

The Kirpi vehicle is intended for use in fighting Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists in the Southeast, where the clashes mostly take place. But following the delivery of the TSK's first order, BMC began to struggle financially. Workers of the company have been protesting in front of the company's factory in Izmir's Bornova district, claiming they have not been paid for some time.

Am i the only one around here who is sad about the fate of a great, combat proven vehicle like Kirpi?
