Brother of Brussels Suicide Bomber is Headed to Rio Olympics

The brother of one of the Brussels suicide bombers is headed to Rio.

Mourad Laachraoui is set to compete in 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil after winning gold for Belgium at the European Taekwondo Championships on Friday, Reuters reported.

Laachraoui's older brother, Najim, was one of the men who blew themselves up at the Brussels Airport in March as part of a set of terrorist attacks that left 32 dead.

Laachraoui took the top prize in the Under-54kg category in Montreux, Switzerland, beating out 18-year-old Jesus Tortosa of Spain.

The 21-year-old is set to compete August 5 in Rio De Janeiro.

Najim Laachraoui was an Islamist fighter in Syria and is believed to have been involved in the manufacture of explosive belts that were used in the November 2015 terror attacks in France.

In the wake of the Brussels bombings, Mourad Laachraoui spoke at a press conference about his brother.

Laachraoui said he didn't know when or how his brother had become radicalized, but remembered him as an intelligent boy.

“When we were younger we were close, but as I became more passionate about sport we grew apart,” Laachraoui said.

It was not his fault that his brother did something wrong. Why to punish someone to his brother's act. If he belongs to some third world country then he might be in prison. Fortunately, he is living in a society where he can contribute and not answerable to someone else deeds.

Laachraoui may be selected to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The quota place for Belgian team in the men's 58 kg was originally earned by Si Mohamed Ketbi via his world ranking position. However, Ketbi has struggled to maintain his weight and was unable to compete at the European Championships. The Belgian Taewkondo Federation is yet to decide between the three candidates that met the standard of being in the top 20 of the global Olympic 58 kg rankings with Laachraoui, ranked 15th, Ketbi, ranked 6th and Salaheddine Bensaleh, ranked 18 all eligible.

Brussels bomber’s brother could compete in Olympics

Laachraoui is one of three candidates for the one Belgian 58kg berth at the Rio Olympics, a Belgium Taekwondo Union official said Saturday.

The three candidates met a standard of being in the top 20 of the global Olympic 58kg ranking. Laachraoui was ranked No. 15, behind No. 6 Si Mohamed Ketbi and ahead of No. 18 Salaheddine Bensaleh, at the end of April.

A Belgian Olympic Committee official said Saturday that the representative for Rio has not been chosen.

“We will communicate the first selection in about one week from now,” the official said in a text message.
