Taliban insurgents stormed a prison in the capital of central Ghazni province on Sunday night, releasing about 350 prisoners, local officials said.

The incident took place after Taliban insurgents attacked the jail and started clashes with the security forces in which a number of security soldiers were killed, according to the officials.

The clashes still continue in the province and many explosions have been heard coming from inside the prison, officials said.

However, the officials did not provide more details about the attack.

The Taliban have not yet commented on the incident.

GHAZNI: More than 350 inmates have escaped after an attack by Afghan Taliban insurgents on the main prison in eastern Ghazni province early on Monday, an Afghan official said.

Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, deputy provincial governor of Ghazni said that insurgents wearing military uniforms launched a well-organised attack to free the inmates.

Ahmadi says the attack was started by a suicide bomber that then allowed other insurgents to get inside the compound.

He says four police guards were killed and seven others were wounded, and that three insurgents were also killed in the early morning battle.

A Reuters reporter at the scene saw the bodies of two men who appeared to be suicide bombers and a blown-up car that had apparently been used to destroy the main entrance of the jail.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in an email to the media.

Security officials would not confirm how many prisoners were in the jail.

Too early to comment as its a developing story but bad news indeed.

It's happened in Pakistan before. Usually, it's an inside job, where hundreds of fighters storm the jails. Most of the guards end up running away.

Sources now say that prior to the break the NDS moved away 20 dangerous prisoners, so probably the had intel about the break, why they didnt take measures to stop the entire break is something that needs to be asked.

Did they report how many taliban fighters there were? They usually come in overwhelming numbers, so most guards see no chance of being able to fight back and run to save their own lives.

What if NDS let it happen so to blame Pakistan once again?

@A-Team yesterday you were arguing with me over governmental control in cities.
As per Afghan standards, I believe Ghazni is among big cities.

100 taliban dead
now 350 released by the terrorist
that is a big problem then

This is very bad news.

The simple fact is that the current Afghan Government does not control the country and its only a matter of time when the Taliban will take over. Best to negotiate with them soon, otherwise you won't have that option on the table.

Documents received by TOLOnews show a so-called Taliban judge, several senior commanders and three would-be suicide bombers were among 158 inmates - considered to be serious threats to national security - who escaped from Ghazni's maximum security prison early Monday.

Mawlavi Sahib Jan was the so-called judge, and scores of senior members of the Taliban, including Mawlavi Naqibullah, Mullah Halim Akhunzada, Mawlavi Abdul Hakim Wardak, Mawlavi Esmatullah, Mullah Aziz and Mawlavi Takbeer.

The Ministry of Interior Affairs (MoI) had earlier said however that 148 of the escaped inmates were incarcerated on account of insurgency and that they posed a threat to national security. However, documents in TOLOnews' possession puts this number at 158.

MoI announced Tuesday that five officials including policemen and the prison warden have been arrested in connection with Monday's prison break – the second largest in the country's recent history after the Kandahar incident four years ago which saw 500 inmates escape.

The ministry stated it's the task team appointed to investigate the incident has completed its probe and will possibly submit its final report on Tuesday to President Ashraf Ghani.

"Today we may share the final report on Ghazni prison [break] with the government," MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said. "We have arrested five officials who are [suspected of being] directly responsible for the prison's security and they are being interrogated now."

MoI officials have said that a massive search operation is currently underway to re-arrest the prisoners who escaped.

"A few days back we transferred twenty Taliban commanders to Kabul from this jail," Sediqqi said hours after the incident happened.

Substandard facilities used for keeping the detainees is said to be the major reason behind the escape of hundreds of prisoners.

Human rights organizations, meanwhile, criticized the government for not having proper detention centers for those who are being held on the charges of killing innocent civilians.

"Most of the inmates are being held at rental houses and they have contacts outside," said Rafiullah Bedar, a spokesman for Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC).

In addition, senators in the Upper House (Meshrano Jirga) on Tuesday also blamed the government for the Ghazni jail break.

"We want the security authorities impeached [to Parliament]," said Anarkali Honaryar, who represents Afghan Sikh community in the Senate.
