Nirbhay, India’s long-range subsonic cruise missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, off Odisha coast, was successfully test-fired on Friday.

This was the third developmental trial of nuclear-weapons capable Nirbhay, which has an operational range of 1,000 km.

The first trial in March 2013 had to be aborted midway after the missile deviated from its pre-designated trajectory. The second trial held on October 17, 2014, however, was a resounding success with the missile demonstrating its manoeuvring ability and zeroing in on the target through a steep dive at the pre-designated impact point in the Bay of Bengal.

Similar to Tomahawk

Stated to be similar to the American Tomahawk, the indigenously-developed low-altitude flying Nirbhay can evade radar detection.

The two-stage missile initially lifts off like a rocket and once the first stage gets separated, the wings get deployed as it cruises like an aircraft with the thrust given by turbo-prop engine. The loitering missile has the capability to search and pick its target.

During the last trial, the missile cruised at a speed of 0.7 Mach and successfully navigated 15 waypoints, while manoeuvring towards the pre-designated target of more than 1,000 km after a flight of 70 minutes.

Pre-launch checks

Meanwhile Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) missile scientists have carried out pre-launch checks on Thursday. Top missile scientists told The Hindu that new manoeuvres would be tried during Friday’s mission as compared to the last trial.

The missile has been mainly developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru, while Research Centre Imarat and DRDL from Hyderabad also contributed in its development.

Good news, but it is not similar to tomahawk which having 2500 km range and can destroy targets with deadly precision. Our nirbhay is having only 800 to 1000km range.

Induct as soon as possible and next level will be increase range. Best news of the Day!

That can be added latter with better engine and fuel and tweaking.

Test fire: India's indigenous cruise missile Nirbhay fails midway

BHUBANESWAR: India's indigenous surface-to-surface cruise missile Nirbhay nose-dived midway after it test fired in Odisha on Friday.

According to Defence Research and Development Organisation ( DRDO) sources, the missile was launched from the Chandipur Integrated Test Range ( ITR) in Balasore district at 11.38 a.m.

Although the take off was successful amid repeated disruptions of countdown, the missile missed the target after 11 minutes after it was test fired, said the sources.

The missile had a range of 750-1,000 km. But it nose-dived after covering 128 km in the Bay of Bengal.

The missile's first test on March 12, 2013 had also failed as it too fell after 20 minutes of flight. The second test on October 17, 2014 was also not up to the mark as it could not maintain a low height.

The cruise missile is expected to supplement the Indo-Russian joint venture supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, which can carry warheads up to 290 km.

The two-stage missile has a length of six metres, a diameter of 0.52 m, a wing span 2.7 m and a launch weight of about 1,500 kg.

No comparison just want to know does all subsonic works same way and the guidance system and flights are same.

beta jee is gaoon main 1 lakh chutiyeee basty hain or her aik ka apna style hai ke mery abaa ka missile aysa hai ery abba ka wesa hai xhor de ye baat bhool ja warna thread ka wo haal ho ga jo sunny leon ka film ke end main hota hai

Babur and Ra'ad are perfectly executing low diving maneuvers at the height of 10 meters. Even you can see the shadow of missile on the ground.

Thats all the difference you need to know and which matters

Actually tomahawk is yesteryear's technology, and we are struggling with it (2 failiure out of 3). US has developed much more deadly agm 129 & agm 86 for their airforces. Now I am start believing pak's claim of brahmos is actually a Russian missile with Indian paint job.
