Brazilian Army updates air defence organisation

The Brazilian Army's 12th Jungle Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group (12th GAAAe Sl), based in Manaus, will amalgamate the 1st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade (1st Bda AAAe) of Garujá (State of São Paulo) in 2018, according to an official document viewed by IHS Jane's.

Other notable moves, in line with Army Strategic Plan 2016-19, include in 2017 transforming 3rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battery (3rd Bia AAAe) of Uruguaiana, State of Rio Grande do Sul, into the 9th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group (9º GAAAe) and relocating the unit to Três Lagoas, State of Mato Grosso do Sul.

The 14th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battery (14th Bia AAAe) in Olinda, State of Pernambuco, was officially deactivated on 20 December 2016 to form the 12th Jungle Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group (12º GAAAe Sl) in Manaus, State of Amazonas, equipped with 9K338 Igla-S and RBS 70 missile systems.

The 11th Self-propelled Anti-Aircraft Battery (11th Bia AAAe AP) with its Gepard 1A2s self-propelled anti-aircraft gun systems, which is part of the 5th Armoured Infantry Brigade (5th Bda Inf Bld), moved to Rio Negro, State of Paraná, from Ponta Grossa.

The army has also conducted a study for potentially establishing an Anti-Aircraft Defence Command.
