BrahMos secures USD 4 billion order to deliver cruise missiles

Bangalore, Feb 8 (PTI) Indo-Russian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace has secured orders from the Armed Forces to deliver supersonic cruise missiles, valued at USD four billion, a top company official said today.

The orders by Army, Navy and Air Force would be executed in the next five-six years, BrahMos Aerospace Chief Executive and Managing Director A Sivathanu Pillai told PTI.

The order book was projected to swell to USD 10billion in the next 10-15 years given the demand in India, Russia and "other countries", which he did not name.

BrahMos Aerospace is a USD 300 million joint venturebetween Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) thatholds 50.5 per cent stake and Military IndustrialConsortium/MPO Machinostroyenia of Russia the remainingequity.

BrahMos cruise missiles with a range of 290 km arealready in service in the Army and Navy. "We are nowconcentrating on the air version of the cruise missile andunder-water version.

"So, all the three services are going to have theBrahMos system," Pillai said.

The Sukhoi-30 fitted with the missile, whose weight would be reduced from 3.9 tonnes to 2.5 tonnes, would be flown next year, he said.

Pillai said both India and Russia were augmenting capacity to manufacture the missiles to meet the demand.

Indian industries providing components for the missileprogramme are expected to almost double their investment inthe next two-three years to scale up supplies.

BrahMos was bringing in new industries as suppliers toenhance competition and bring down component prices, he said.

Currently, the engine and seeker were the Russian components in the cruise missile he said, adding "we are going to make them in India."

BrahMos'' "next target" is to develop hypersonic reusable missiles with Russia, he said.

wat is hypersonic reusable missiles?

Well after you use it the missile self assembles itself, and flies back into its own container for reuse:woot:

just kidding. Perhaps they were talking about the containers.

wat is hypersonic reusable missiles?

Delivers the payload and return to base.

"INDIA BUILDING REUSABLE MISSILES

Article Abstract:

Mr APJ Abdul Kalam has stated in an interview that India is trying to build a long-range missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead which can be used nearly 100 times. The design of the missile is in the conceptual stage. It will be completed in 3-4 years. It is a combination of aircraft cruise missile and remotely piloted vehicle. The reusable missile can travel at hypersonic speed. It will be made of composite material to prevent detection by radar. The Defence Research and Development Organisation plans to make a formal proposal to the Ministry of Defence for funding. (vv)"

Reusable launch vehicles. Some think that rocket mail, or at least ultra-elite business package delivery, may become commercially viable with the development of fully reusable launch systems, particularly single-stage to orbit vehicles. Such systems would allow package delivery anywhere in the world in 30–45 minutes. This idea has been forwarded by aerospace engineer Robert Zubrin of Mars Society fame, and was the original business plan behind Pioneer Rocketplane (now Rocketplane Limited, Inc.), which he co-founded. Zubrin has since left the company, which is now focused on pursuing a somewhat more conventional space tourism strategy. The potential of package delivery with reusable launch vehicles is discussed in Zubrin's book Entering Space.

On 3 December 2005, XCOR Aerospace flew its EZ-Rocket (a rocket powered Long-EZ aircraft the company built as a demonstrator for its reusable rocket engines) from Mojave, California to California City, California, both in Kern County. Test pilot Dick Rutan made the flight which lasted about 9 minutes and carried US mail from the post office in Mojave to addresses in California City onboard. This was the first time that a manned, rocket powered aircraft was used to carry US Mail.

Thanks for the link but I really don't think it was a serious idea.

I found the source of the article, it's pretty old. 1998 and published in the economic times.

Have respect for this man, he is not an ordinary guy who shoots of his mouth. He was our premier scientist and our President too. He was the one who made the Indian IGMDP (Integrated Missile Development Program) a success. He dedicated his whole life for this country and hasn't even married for love of his work.

He is dear to every Indian, so don't make knee jerk statements.
