The Army on Sunday successfully test fired the 290-km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile at the Pokharan range here to operationalise the second regiment of the weapon system in service.

“In conformity and pursuit of operational and strategic surface to surface missile capability development, the second BrahMos unit of Indian Army has been operationalised. The Indian Army unit successfully launched BrahMos missile and destroyed the preselected target in the field firing ranges in Rajasthan,” an Army spokesperson said here.

The test was witnessed by senior Army officials including Vice Chief Lt. Gen. Shri Krishna Singh and Director General Military Operations (DGMO) Lt. Gen. A.K. Chaudhary.

The Army has so far placed orders for three regiments of the supersonic cruise missile and with Sunday’s test firing; two of them have been inducted operationally.

The Defence Ministry has also given a go ahead to the Army to induct a third regiment for being deployed in Arunachal Pradesh along the China border.

One regiment of the 290-km range BrahMos consists around 65 missiles, five mobile autonomous launchers on Tatra vehicles and two mobile command posts, among other equipment.

BrahMos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian Joint venture company headed by A. Sivathanu Pillai, is also working to develop the submarine launched, air launched and a hyper-sonic version of the missile in the near future.

It has already been inducted into the Navy and is deployed on almost all the front line surface warships of the maritime force.

Brahmos is definitely a supersonic missile right now with mach number somewhere between 3 and 4.

But, brahmos II will be a hypersonic missile which is currently under development will be hypersonic.

What axtra thing is tested in this test which was not before can anybody put some details. ???

Supersonic is operational and Hypersonic is in development phase.

Scientists have achieved a speed of 6.6 Mach and has a target of 7.0+ Mach in lab tests.

Nothing extra. Just the second Missile Regiment of these missiles on the western front was operationalised with this firing exercise. Next will be operationalisation of a third Missile Regiment on the northern border. Read post#1!

It was simply a user test and its a routine exercise. Moreover, you never know if anything else is going behind the curtains and We may get an update of successful launch of new missile.

JAISALMER: The Army will test fire supersonic cruise missile BrahMos on Sunday at the Pokhran field firing range near here. Target preparation for the test fire has already been completed and senior officers of the Army will watch and review the trial.

The test fire will check the efficiency of the land attack version block 2 BrahMos missile fitted with advance seeker software with a capacity of neutralizing the target fully, Army sources said.

Automatic launch pad preparations are made between Chandhan and Lathi villages with the target placed at Ajosar village. The missile will attempt to neutralize the target place at an approximate distance of 28 km from its launch pad.

The missile will provide the Army an enhanced capability to select particular land target among a group of land targets as it can cruise at low altitudes fully evading enemy radar and air defence systems. Moreover, these missiles are easier and cheaper to operate. The Army has already begun inducting the land version of BrahMos with the first battery in June 2007. Each battery is equipped with four mobile launchers mounted on 12x12 tatra transporters.

Though developed under a joint venture with Russia, the entire credit for developing this supersonic cruise missile version of BrahMos, which can achieve a speed of up to 2.8 Mach, goes to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The organization has so far developed several variants of the missile having maximum range of 300 km with capability of carrying 200 kg warhead.

Currently, work is in progress to develop an air launched variant of BrahMos to be fitted with Sukhoi-30 fighter planes.
