Bangladesh to raise new border force

Bangladesh has decided to disband its mutiny-hit paramilitary unit, the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), and raise a new force to guard its borders.

The BDR -- responsible mainly for guarding Bangladesh's over 4,000 km (2,485 miles) border with India and Myanmar - revolted on February 25 at their headquarters in Dhaka and a dozen other towns.

The rebellion, which lasted 33 hours and ended after the rebels laid down their arms, left at least 80 people killed -- mostly army officers.

Around 1,800 rebel troops deserted their posts following the incident, while 200 were detained. Forty of those arrested are accused of direct involvement in carnage and arson during the mutiny.

The new BDR chief, Brigadier-General Moinul Islam, announced on Saturday that a new border force will be raised soon with disciplined and competent troops -- including those not involved in the February mutiny.

The former BDR chief, Major-General Shakil Ahmed, was among some 57 officers killed in the mutiny. The BDR is traditionally commanded by officers who have served in the army.

What are the chnages mooted? Will BDR have a independant head or continue to look towards BA for that. What about the paystructure?

Yes it will be under Army as usual. Pay structures are same for everybody, all govt employess be it army or BDR. The ration structure may be reviewed. Possibility of going to UN mission may be discarded for ever.
